Dumb Call

In the 7th with one out our coaches called a bunt to try to get the tying run in. In the first part of the at bat I can live with the call. Unfortunately, after several pitches with the batter showing bunt the count got to 3-1. At this point the defense knows that the pitcher is going to throw the ball down the middle and they know that the batter can't let a strike go and let the count go to 3-2. The corner infielders are charging hard and with everyone knowing that a safety squeeze was coming they made the easy out at home. This was a poor call by the coaches in this situation. Let the hitter swing away at a great pitch and take your chances. The coaches cost us a run here and maybe the game.

Yeah. Augie really doesn't know how/when to make a squeeze play call like that.

Once he straightens out these "game costing errors", maybe he'll win some games and maybe get us to Omaha.

I know where you're coming from but you gotta trust Augie.
He knows what he's doing.

No one questions Augie's baseball knowledge and I will be the first to admit he is the greatest college baseball coach in the game right now and one of the top two all time just behind Dedeaux; but his obsession with the bunt is frustrating and it is forcing our pitching staff to be perfect which is a tough task. We give away so many outs with the continual bunting and last night everyone in the stadium and those of us watching on the net knew what was coming and the runner was thrown out by a mile. I trust Augie, and I am not saying we need to go for a gorilla ball LSU type approach because pitching and defense win championships most of the time but on this issue of the bunt love there are a lot of longhorn baseball fans who will just have to agree to disagree.

Some if it may also be that Augie is coaching for later in the season. Say we don't bunt and do those things right now in game situations, and later in the year when we *need* to get it done, our players don't have the game experience to feel confident and do it. That would be even more frustrating. I think Augie would take a loss now if it helped prepare our guys for later.
