Duggan safety -- a critique and a rules question

I agree with all you say except the part about an uncontested field goal. That exists in the NFL and in high school, but not in college. I read a while ago that it was removed from the NCAA rulebook long ago (1950, iirc). If they took a fair catch, they would've had to take a snap, so if they wanted to kick a field goal it would've been 7 or 8 yards back.

Seems unfair to me that any or all offensive players can hold the defensive players so that the clock runs out in this situation. It was easy to see there was one full second left therefore we should have had another play. Plus I think they should have gave us one or two more seconds to receive the kickoff. If TCU had to kick off 10 yards further back I think that would be from the 10-yard line but if we do a fair catch on the kickoff we would probably be past midfield on the Texas side so it would be too long of a distance to have a free play for a field goal we would have to do the lateral thing I think.

Also I believe that the penalties hurt Texas much more than the penalties hurt TCU. But, no doubt, the officiating was absolutely atrocious to the point of being comical. I really believe there would be officiating crews in high school that could have done a better job than that.
I could think of three penalties just off the top of my head that were not called the interference of eagles, that was an obvious call and the holding penalty that was called and then the flag was picked up he saw the foul but was talked into picking up the flag that was on Dugan's run to the 1-yard line that should have been called it would have been 10 yards further back, around the 25 or 30, and Mitchell being offsides when a running back clearly moves before Mitchell got to the line of scrimmage that was a blunder also. These officials were in over there heads.

The most important thing to take from this article is:

1) Steve Shaw is from the SEC and was an excellent official/referee

2) Walleye Burks is a reject from the BigSky & MWC, hand picked by Walt Anderson, who was handpicked by Donnie Duncan. Walleye was a horrible referee, but so was everyone Walt Anderson chose. His only competent referees were inherited or forced one him - Mike Defee, Cooper Castleberry, & the pride of Onion Creek.

Bowelsby was warned about Duncan, and the warning came to fruition. Connect the dots!

We are loaded with MWC rejects, be it Scott Campbell, Brad Van Vark, the midget from Arizona, and I can't wait for Walleye to roll Dan Romero back out.

Incompetence runs rampant in Las Colinas, and only Dr Boren cared. Time for The University of Texas to flex its mu$cle$ and make changes. We have a great gig in the Big XII, a league where we only have to win one tough game to make the final four. Michigan, State Penn, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Florida, USC, Washington would kill for a deal like that.

penalties.....plenty of them and some were very questionable....!

Was the penalty on Mitchell for targeting for real?

All these refs keep missing calls....Tech game holding near goal line was obvious but not called and ref was 2-3 yards away.
