Drum Replacement

Curious that The University of Texas would tear down the Denton Cooley Pavilion to build a Dell Medical Center.

"Denton Arthur Cooley (born August 22, 1920) is an American heart surgeon famous for performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart. Cooley is also founder and surgeon in-chief of The Texas Heart Institute, chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, consultant in Cardiovascular Surgery at Texas Children's Hospital, and a clinical professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston."

"Cooley reportedly answered in the affirmative when a lawyer during a trial asked him if he considered himself to be the best heart surgeon in the world. “Don’t you think that’s being rather immodest?” the lawyer replied. “Perhaps,” Cooley responded. “But remember I’m under oath.”"

"The Denton A. Cooley Pavilion -- a two-level, 44,000-square foot facility -- is named for UT basketball letterman Dr. Denton Cooley (1939-41), who performed the first successful heart transplant in the United States (1968) and implanted the first totally artificial heart in a human (1969). "

Denton Cooley, basketball letterman at UT-Austin. Graduate of UT-Austin. Pioneering, world renoun medical doctor in heart surgery.

Michael Dell, UT-Austin dropout. Computer geek.

????

Oh, I meant $$$$.

Sadly, $$$$>$$$ when it comes to UT. IIRC Cooley did contribute millions to build the Cooley Pavilion.

Now to be upstaged by a computer salesman.

Go figure.

From reading, it appears that the facilities will be relocated. I think it's too early to assume that Cooley's name is gone; same for the Erwin Center name.

So where do they put the facility, practice and arena?

I can't think of anywhere on the current campus unless the football team loses their bubble and practice fields.

Maybe that HS or what was Texas HS at one time, get rid of the track and soccer field, near Disch Falk and McCombs fields?

Displace some homes on the east side of 35?

Annex some land in west campus? North of Campus somewhere? Intramural Fields?

I would think at least a 15,000 seat building.......

I thought this thread was about brake repair.

But seriously, It is high time the Erwin Center was replaced with a more basketball friendly arena. I like the drum's current location, but that's about all I like about it.

That neighborhood to the East of campus is ready for UT. They have rebuked and thwarted UT's recent attempts to try to claim imminent domain a few times and for things more academic than a basketball arena and practice facility. It will get nasty and interesting if that is the direction they try to go.

I am sure they are going into it willy nilly and have land or an area already procured. Rephrase that to hope they do.

The tennis team has an indoor facility at the UT Golf Club, there are 6 indoor and 4 outdoor courts. Wonder if they'd do another outdoor facility since P-A is about to be torn up.

I'd vote for a move back to Gregory. Not sure if it could be rebuilt/renovated to the point of holding 12-15K seats, but that'd be ideal if possible.

I haven't been back to Gregory in decades, but I can't imagine how that location would work these days. The parking situation at the FEC is bad now, but it would be a nightmare on campus.

Parking will be a nightmare anywhere in the downtown/campus area probably as long as the world exists in its present form....

For Gregory they could use the same lots/garages used for the FEC now (the two lots near the swim center, the garage across from DKRTMS, the one near Jester, etc.). Or maybe they could build an arena adjacent to (or in place of) the Rec-Sports center and still use the same lots/garages.

Better yet, they can just do away with the hoops teams altogether.

Gregory only seats 4K with standing room. I've always been in favor of doing some preseason "exhibition" games there, like against Lenoir-Rhyne or wherever Rick went to school. But there's no way to turn it into an actual full-time facility for college basketball.

I think with some full scale teardowns, and maybe closing off 20th St. in between San Jac and Dedman/ECD, the footprint for RecSports would be a decent spot for a brand new arena. It wouldn't be huge but if it was tall it could have a nice fieldhouse atmosphere like the Indiana Pacers have.

I have long been an advocate to have the games in December, when classes are not in session for Winter Break, moved to the Gregory. The few fans and students going would seem much louder, it would be a really fun atmosphere and maybe inspire more people to go.

They could stock less concessions and have less overhead. It would create a buzz on a sleeping campus. I would even like to see some middle tiered music acts play the Gregory. Ones not big enough to play the Erwin or Cedar Park yet bigger than a joint on Red River or Sixth Street.
