Drug resistant swine flu

Many epidemiologists expect the real crisis to emerge this fall. Should drug resistant forms arise we could be in for a nasty season.

Oh, those of you who doubt evolution can disregard this news!

Your ignorance is only outmatched by your arrogance. You don't further your cause when you mis-characterize your opponents point of view.

OBVIOUSLY evolution exists. I just doubt the theory of evolution as an explanation of all lifeforms on this planet. The whole cell to human hypothesis is the part that most critique. No one questions that evolution takes place on a small scale.

Back to the topic at hand, I hope that it does not become resistant that quickly. That would indeed mean big trouble.

why is it always those on the left that go into panic mode regarding any form of crisis....is it because you realize the government really will not be able to do anything for you when the Sh$% hits the fan?

I personally like the idea of the Intelligent Designer deciding to invent drug resistant swine flu strains.... Show he has a sense of humor regarding the human race. Probably still pissed about the Apple thing...

Most doctors as well as the CDC predicted that the virus would mutate into a more virulent strain. Not unusual for viruses.

GT, I don't get your evolution comment. Viruses mutate all the time. You could point to MRSA or VRSA if you cared about the issue. Instead, it appears more likely that you just wanted to take a dig at people.

As for the article, drug resistance is a relatively minor issue compared to virulence/pathogenicity. Tamiflu must be taken within 24-48 hours of first symptoms. So unless a patient can get to a doctor ASAP and then have the doctor identify the virus ASAP and get the patient to the pharmacy ASAP, the drug is useless. And it doesn't eliminate symptoms but rather lessons the severity of symptoms by slowing viral replication. As such, its use is limited except in emergency, epidemic control.

This is a "left" vs. "right" issue? A religious issue? As long as we don't include college football in the mix we might be able to avoid mixing the three most volatile subjects known to man. I bet it would be a lot like a meth lab exploding.

I guess i'd have to believe the first swine flu "outbreak" was an issue, before I start to worry about this one.

Hilarious post above, btw.

Maybe killing a third of humanity is God's way, (or Nature's way, or Karma's way), of solving global warming.

Not a sense of humor necessarily, just pragmatism.

GT,
I don't get your comments at all. They seem to be misplaced at the very least. I am worried about swine flu and what 'might' be. Any disease that mutates so quickly, and can be spread so easily can be quite frightening. I hope that researchers can get a handle on this very real issue soon.

Why is disease a right/left issue? Or even a religious/non religious issue? That makes no sense at all. If I were to run for office, let it be known for the record, that I am anti-disease and pro-health.

Theu,

Where did I suggest that this is left/right or religious/non-religious?

I see this (as I see everything) as an example of the importance of evolutionary theory to applied biology - in this case virology. There are still people who believe evolution is a farce. Some of them frequent WM. There's nothing wrong with pointing out an instance of observed evolution and in noting that those evolutionary changes have major implications for human health.

I am probably the closest thing to a young-earth creationist on this board, and I am hardly a threat to science, education, and public health.

My understanding of this issue of mutated swine flu is exactly the same as GT_WT. That hardly poses a threat. I think the proposed existence and effect of "science-deniers" is in full hyberbole mode.

His point was that there should be open debate in science. Whether a scientist is right or wrong, his research should be heard rather than shouted down. Science should be disproved with science not words.

But, back to what the subject should be, what do you think we should do regarding the swine flu? Scaring people won't have a positive effect. I know of 5 kids at an exclusive camp in Maine who have swine flu. One went home, I think, while the others stayed at camp. Should this be publicized?

What if people die from the live, attenuated vaccine? It, to my knowledge, has never been tested in humans. Perhaps having it available but not mandating vaccination is a better option.

This debate can be easily settled by reading "The great influenza : the epic story of the deadliest plague in history
Barry, John M., 1947- " It is the defining work. And yes, this influenza could very well return in the fall to haunt as a most virulent strain....
