Driving to Fredericksburg from DFW

The Over Cusser

My wife and I have been wanting to take a weekend trip down to the hill country to "get away from it all." We would like to take our time driving through and stay the night in Fredericksburg. I've recently taken up photography as a hobby and would like to know if there are any must see stops or routes I should take.

Also, how far away is Fred. from Lukenbach. I would like to enjoy a beer or two there seeing as how I've never been.

F'burg is maybe 20 minutes away from Luckenbach, depending on how fast you drive.

Luckenbach is great for just chillin and having a cold one. I've been there a couple of times. F'burg... MANY times. I have relatives there. The F'burg Brewery on Main St is a must stop! The Nimitz Museum, Enchanted Rock, Lady Bird park, and wineries outside of F'burg are all great for photography. Hope this helps! If you need addl info, feel free to PM me.

You should take 281 down and stop and get photos of the old Art Deco Hotel in Mineral Wells. It is a much nicer route than I35 and depending on what time you're traveling, it could be quicker.

I concur on 281, but if you end up in Mineral Wells on your way to F'burg, you're doing it wrong. Mineral Wells is about 40-50 miles NW of Ft. Worth. Taking 281, you can go through little towns like Hamilton, Hico and Glen Rose. Also, Marble Falls and Johnson City have some cool areas to shoot when you're getting closer to F'burg

Don't forget Longhorn Caverns.

Don't forget the Willow City Loop just outside of Fredericksburg. As you come down 281 turn west just before Johnson City onto RR 1323. A quaint little road that produced good blue bonnet pictures for our family a couple of years ago around April. At the end of RR 1323 lies Willow City and the entrance to the Loop to the north.

Heading north a few miles you begin to catch glimpses of the largest hill range (reaches 400-600 feet above surrounding terrain) in central Texas to the west running South to North. The Loop eventually snakes through this range for more good scenery and finally opens out on the west side of the range for additional vistas to the north and east. These vistas of the range can also be seen from Enchanted Rock about 10-20 miles to the west and at dusk and with a little imagination can suggest a real and distant mountain range. The trip back into town on 16 also produces spectacular views of this range as well as a few close up views for photography in the combination of scrub oaks, cacti and barren pink granite meadows.

I can't emphasize enough that this region harbors perhaps the greatest amount of geological diversity in the state. Really, you have to hit West Texas 400 miles further before you get a worthy challenge-- namely the emergence from limestone capped mountains of the buried mountain range you live on in Dallas and whose western boundary you have traveled on to get to Marble Falls.

When I drive down to F’Burg from DFW, I typically make my way over to Hwy 16 (Llano, San Saba). It is more rustic, less traffic and bigger views. Route I take:

67 – Through Cleburne, through Glen Rose to Chalk Mountain
Hwy 220 from Chalk Mountain to Hico
281 from Hico to Hamilton
RM road 2005 from Hamilton to Goldthwaite
16 all the way down to F’Burg

Well worth it.
