Driver's licence rights

I work for the state and sometimes travel to schools to do individual evaluations with students. Recently schools have been asking for my driver's license to run a background scan before I do my evaluation. I don't have a problem with that. But the last school I visited not only ran a scan on my driver's license but then said that they needed to keep my driver's license at the school office until I left the school. I have a problem with that because 1) it is personal property, 2) it is my official identification card and I should be able to have it on my person, and 3) it contains personal information, so I want to be aware of who has access to it at any given moment. I said I objected to leaving it at the desk and the office personnel called the assistant principal who let me keep the license with me? My question is what if he had not allowed me to keep my license with me? Does anybody know if I have to be willing to hand over my driver's license to do work in a public school?

I never really thought about this. I go to school once or twice a week. Most just want to see my license. I've had a couple of people ask for mine, but since I was only going to be in the school for a couple of minutes, I gave it tothem.

Dude, in this day and age is it that offensive that a school wants to make sure you're 100% on the up and up before you start walking down their halls?

I know it's your job and all, I'm just sayin'....

Taling possession of his driver's license insures exactly jack **** ad far as being "on the up and up". It DOES increase his risk that his license will be lost through no fault of his own.

Technically I believe the State of Texas actually 'owns' the drivers license, it's not your personal property.

But with identity theft being the #1 crime in America, I never let anyone keep my drivers license. Now days with every computer/scanner/printer, they can make copies and laminate them and no layman would be able to tell the difference between the real thing.

When someone wants to make a copy of my TDL, I ask for the copy and write "COPY" accross the image, then they can have it.

No school official has any business taking control of your driver's license away from you.

If they think they do, they ought to be fired.

I go to schools all the time, and generally at the same day and time each week At one particular one, the secretary asked for my driver's license every week and also asked where I was going. I finally started teasing her that she never recognizes me so now, after almost two years, she just hands a nametag over. Yea!!
