I am needing a new driver for $300 or less. I have never bought one before, just got hand me downs. What are the good ones and what do I need look at when shopping?

My Advice: You need to hit several before you buy, buy the one you feel most comfortable with. Experiment with different shafts too. What I use might not be the best fit for you.

thanks, was already planning on doing that but what about which brands to start with? As far as shaft and loft, i will have to find that stuff out at the store.

I am looking at Taylor Made or Calloway Big Berthas.

I really like my Ping G2. They have newer models now that I have not tried out, but I imagine they are good. I also really like Taylor Made - though I prefer the Ping.

I have a taylor made R7 that's draw weighted. I love it because I know i can hit it the same way EVERY time, my other clubs...not so much

If you buy new, check out tgw.com Whenever I buy new I get it from them. Same day/fast shipping, no sales tax, some products you can't find (e.g. individual clubs) and everything comes brand new in the wrappers (I have stopped shopping at Golfsmith for that reason).

As everyone else has mentioned, buying used from callaway preowned is a very good option. They will allow you to pick it up at their warehouse here in Austin if you ask.
