we picked up a verbal from drew allen, QB, san antonio yesterday. he said in an interview, with an OU site mind you, that he dreamed of playing at texas, his dad played at texas, he goes to texas games all the time, and will continue to do so.

this is going to be funny to see some people's reaction to this. of course, he will eventually be a sooner.... but man, i don't think i have ever seen a player so openly admit his feelings about a rival school during a verbal.

I too find that kind of remark curious. Well, he picked the one B12 school that guarantees he will never play at DKR. Good luck to the kid.

i dreamed of playing at texas. having that passion ensured that i would never play for oklahoma or texas a&m. even more so if my dad is an ex. curious that this kid can put away an entire childhood of fervent rivalry when i'm sure there are other schools interested in him. its not like they are a great school, just a great football program.

well, i think his main suitors besides us were OSU and Purdue. When given those choices, OU has to win out.

well, i'd go to purdue in a second over ou. unless i wanted to be a weatherman. again, i don't see it, but i don't have to.

The kid's options besides OU were:

Purdue - Who is going to be his coach. Tiller wore out his welcome a couple of years back. They are just trying to get the cash together to find a replacement.

Okie Lite - He's concerned about playing for "a man, an adult"

Colorado - That is the worst administration and athletic department in the nation. Why anyone would go to CU is beyond me and I went there for graduate school.

K-State - color Prince gone. Sure he got an extension, but increase the pay, extend the term, lower the buyout. The $$$ thought it was a joke to refuse to interview dozens of qualified candidates to hire a guy that was disliked in Southwest Kansas and not qualified for the job. The AD is gone, Prince is next.

Kansas - going a different direction, but Allen's mom was afraid Mangino would eat him.

SMU - see Purdue. Jones run at SMU can only be characterized by George Gobel's old line, "Did you ever feel like the whole world is a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes". Jones fits in Highland Park about as well as Mike Sherman will at A&M.

OU is a great choice for Allen. Which other dominant national program was pursuing him? Ohio State? Florida? USC? LSU? Mack has his QBs and didn't have room. Seems like a class kid and I hope he does really well in the Dust Bowl. I'd liek to see hm at his best when we beat them.

Every player should pick the best place for him. Most players want to play. If he's content with practicing and not playing, who am I to tell him differently?

peterson was different. we've had many a player from texas play for OU that would have picked UT over OU if given the opportunity. and many players that were texas fans before coming to OU.

but he said he attends the home games, is a legacy, and will CONTINUE to go to UT home games. i don't have a problem with anything except maybe the last part.

but in reality, when will he be able to go for the next 5 years?

Once he's been through 2-a-days his freshman year he will have bonded with his team mates and all thoughts of UT will be of a team he wants to beat by 50.

There seems to be a history developing of very good quarterbacks, who grew up wanting to play for Texas, not getting the love and going north...and prospering. Two of 'em are gonna tear up the Big 12 North, and maybe Texas, this year...and the San Antonio kid might just be following in their footsteps.

In the "good ol days" you could recruit defensively; get them on your team just to keep them off their team. It's good for the game that those days passed.

So is this guy any good? Did Mack just not recruit him? I guess Gilbert and Shepard were his 2 primary targets, but Shepard bailed. Were we even in the conversation?
