Dravannti Johnson

Truck's Son

Former 4-star LB out of Nederland. Rivals Top 250 and number 31 player in the state in 2008. We stole him from the Aggies after he had originally committed to them.

I haven't heard a thing about him since he arrived on campus. I know he's only a True Freshman but I'm surprised that his name hasn't been mentioned more. I've heard great things about Emmanuel Acho but nothing about Dravannti.

Looking at our depth chart for 2009, it looks like we'll definitely have a need for another Defensive End. After Eddie Jones and Sam Acho we're pretty thin. Russell Carter is an unkown quantity at this point and Ahmard Howard may move back to TE.

What are the chances Dravannti makes a position switch and ends up with a hand on the ground in 2009?

Thats a good question Truck

I am also wondering about Dravanti as well as Tyrell Higgins.

Would love to hear and see something on both because they will be needed next year for sure.

Dravannti Johnson is still getting acclimated to D-1 football. He slacked his senior year. He wasn't even first team all-district in his district. He needs to pick it up and show that he is committed and not just go off of physical ability.

Tyrell Higgins did leave the team and was removed from the roster, but he's now back and listed as a walk-on.

What? There is a ton of information on this thread that I have no idea about. Please, those of you that can, please fill us in on more of this stuff

Talk is that Newton was planning on a red shirt but Mack doesn't like to RS running backs even though they have much unproven depth there...He's ran well in the spring.

Dravannti will play some but he won't be in the rotation at LB at least this year it sounds...Don't be surprised if he's moved to TE after it's all said and done....

I see him playing special teams if he's lucky.

I should have said long term depth. Yes, for this year and next we are fine for depth unless somebody has a breakout year and leaves early. But you have to consider what you are going to put on the field in 2010.

Bobino-SR
Muck- JR
KIndle- JR
Norton-JR
Earnest-SO-seems have have been beaten out by the FR for the back-up spots.
The rest are all FR. We do have 2 LB commits in the 09 class.

Moving Roberson over seems to me to show the staff is concerned about depth at LB too.

Since when do we use a FB? Coaches just announced the plan to move over a defensive player for FB in the goalline set, but other than that we don't use them much. Not that it is a good thing but they don't see the field much.

DE depth in 09:

Jones /
Acho / Carter

Then you have Howard who can move back to DE. 3 young guys coming in in 09 including Okafor. I am sure there are other position changes they could look at as well. Houston is still a hybrid DE/DT.

Not as deep as last year or this year but very good talent in top 3.

Not sure I would call it "wasted," but it does seem that throughout Mack's tenure, we have a bad habit of giving schollies to LBs who hit the field occasionally and then either give up or use up eligibility without playing much.

Jamal Joyner (yeah I know... pothead)
Adam(?) McConathy
Marcus Wilkins, who actually made an NFL impact
OJ McClintock, who could have played anywhere but was a head case
Aurmon Satchell
The other Sendlein
Rashad Thomas
Braden Johnson
Lance McFarland
Garnet Smith
Eric Foreman
Jeremy Campbell
Nic Redwine

To be fair, yes, hardly any of these guys actually played LB, but what does that tell LB recruits? If I were Stoops, I'd show high schoolers this list and ask them where they want to end up in 4 years.

I wasn't saying that it's not worth giving them a scholarship. I'm saying that sometimes guys (and especially guys that were supposed to play LB for Texas) seem to get "left behind" for whatever reason. And it's unfair that some of them couldn't control the circumstances, but doesn't change the fact that they didn't pan out. It's kind of obvious how to use that as an opposing coach for recruiting.

Derrick Johnson? Really? He left when this year's recruits were in 8th grade. However strong his impact was on UT while here, I find it hard to believe that Mack/Coach BAMF et al can play the "DJ" card as evidence for goading LBs into playing for Texas. The recent tapes speak for themselves.

We need LBs that can play LB. Hopefully the "new" DJ from the title of the post will find his niche and contribute, along with some of the other young guys like Robinson.

It is going to be hard for him to find a lot of playing time this year with Bobino, Norton, Muck, and Kindle playing so well.

Luckily, it shouldn't be too hard to recruit the position since those guys are upper classmen. On the other hand, if they were underclassmen, recruits might not want to ride the pine for a couple of years. In any case, we have 2 reportedly strong recruits coming in next year and are looking at 1 additional out of stater.

11,

If we were talking about Tommy Nobis, then I'd agree. However, I think DJ is still a pretty viable attraction for the program when all you have to do is recommend to prospects that they turn on the TV on Sunday.

Turn the TV on during NFL ball to watch DJ play? As the sole Longhorn LB in the NFL during Chiefs' routs? I'm not so sure that's going to reel in the talent.
