Draft Actual Height Meaurements

It's not uncommon for college players to have exaggerated heights listed, but some of these are pretty bad.

Name Listed Actual
Kevin Love 6"10" 6'7 3/4"
Derrick Rose 6'4" 6'1 1/2"
Joey Dorsey 6'9" 6'6 1/4"
Lester Hudson 6"3" 5'11 3/4"
DeMarcus Nelson 6'4" 6'1"
Michael Beasely 6'10" 6'7"
Davon Jefferson 6'8" 6'5 1/2"
O.J. Mayo 6'5" 6'3 1/2"
Luc Richard 6'8" 6'5 3/4"
Mbah a Moute

That takes Rose from being a really big point guard to an average sized one, places O.J. Mayo firmly in the tweener range, Kevin Love to small for a power forward and Beasley to the same.

Since nearly all NBA players are listed according their height with shoes on, you probably should use the actual draft measurement with shoes to make your point.

Not really making a point, just thought it was interesting. Shoes add about an inch, not a ton of difference. It takes Beasley and Love to 6'8 instead of 6'7". That's still small for an NBA power forward. Beasley is athletic enough to play at that height, not sure about Love.

Wow I just heard an interview last month with Caliperi talking about Rose being a big point guard and how a team couldn't pass up on a 6-4 point guard with the 1st pick.

All things considered, I think it's pretty amazing that Beasley was able to lead the nation in rebounding despite being only 6'7.

Wait, so love is only 3/4 of an inch taller than me? Man I wished I didn't suck at basketball in high school.

i never understood why the hell they (colleges) do that to football and basketball players. just list them at their real freaking heights. fudging the numbers is gay.

Yeah I remember how Roy Williams suddenly became 6'4" when he graduated high school and arrived at Texas, and then in the NFL he was back down to 6'2".

Forshizzle,
I agree on Kevin Love being a good pro. I had no idea what his numbers were until you posted, but just watching the guy play I had a feeling that he was more athletic than people were giving him credit for (i.e. white guy bias). Once he really gets in shape, he's going to be a beast. My gut is that he's the third best player in the draft and maybe the second. He does things on a court that you just can't teach -- such a great feel for the game and a great touch for a big guy.

He would be a great pairing for Minnesota with Al Jefferson inside. Maybe Kevin McHale will draft him and trade him to the Celtics for Brian Scalabrine.

well, as long as all the other NBA players have their height exagerrated also.... it should all be relative.

if i am 6'1' and really are 5'10" and you are listed at 6'5" and are really 6'2" what's the difference.

it's always been like this. barkley was always listed at 6'7" or 6'8", but it was widely known he was only 6'4". which makes his incredilbe rebounding ability and inside post work even more amazing.

The knock on Beasley and Love is that they aren't athletic. The fact that their measurables are similar doesn't change that.

The fact that neither is very tall for their position does change how they will be viewed. Beasley at best is Derrick Coleman. Love at best is Luis Scola. Both very good players, but not what teams want to draft 2-3.

Didn't really think about that. I always thoguht Beasley was crazy athletic but I guess not. He's just a tenacious basketball player.

beasley is not an elite athlete, but he's got a lot more going for him than just tenacity. he's extremely skilled (much more so than kevin love), strong w/ either hand. those types of skills don't ever show up in combine measurements. and it's those skills that set him apart right now.

Love has some skills, though he's not in the level of Beasley, I concur.

Derrick Coleman had elite skills and was a solid, solid athlete. he was taller than 6'7 as well.

Beasley always seems to have good position and be in the right place as well. He's got a wide enough body that I think he will be fine in the NBA. It's not a white guy bias against Love, my girlfriend is a UCLA alum and I watched him play a lot. I just don't think he will be great at that height. Great college player, but I think the height is going to hurt him a lot more than Beasley in the NBA.

Beasley is an elite athlete. At the very least, anyone that says athleticism has been the knock on him is off his/her rocker.

In years past at the combine JJ Redick posted the same vertical as Andre Iguodala, Chris Kaman had faster sprint and agility drill times than TJ Ford, and Kevin Durant was evaluated as the 2nd worst athlete in his class, supposedly much less athletic than guys like Antanas Kavaliauskas.

The combine numbers mean nothing.

Kevin Love may do great in agility tests, but watch him in a game.

The guy looks like he is in quicksand to me and he is fat.

This guy has NBA bust written all over his fat ***.

I will say what everyone is thinking, the white guys who make it in the NBA are freaky athletic Euros who can handle the rock. Not slow footed guys who play on the block.

He looked pretty agile against the Aggies. And I know we're just talking about the Ags, but he definitely has good lift for a guy his size. I would think he needs to lose some weight because he won't be able to do that into his late 20s at that size, but he has some good skills as well. He can shoot it from 18-20 feet. He's a good passer and rebounder. Maybe Luis Scola is his ceiling, a 10-12 point, 7 rebound guy that does some things to help you win. I wouldn't take him in the top 5, but he's got a place in the league I think.
