Dr. Pepper w/Imperial sugar

First off, I'm NOT talking about Dublin DP, I've had DDP, love it. This is made by Dr. Pepper, bottled in Plano, the only place I've ever seen it is at that convenience store next to K-bob's in Brenham, on my twice a year or so trip through there. 20oz bottle, pale lime green "wrapper" with the retro 10-2-4 logo on it. Haven't had Dublin DP in a while, but this stuff ranks right up there.

Anybody seen this anywhere close to Austin (I'm in Taylor actually, but no matter..)? Can't find anything about it on the net, it has the drpepper website on the bottle, but they don't show this version on the website... Weird.

I have also purchased what you speak of in Carmine (between Brenham and Giddings), along 290 West, not dublin Dr Pepper, but real sugar.

so besides bottling location what is the difference between Dublin DP and the type of which you speak?

Well, I would assume that since it's not made in Dublin, it's not Dublin DP, which is a big difference. In that just because it says it's made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar, it could still be a totally different recipe from the DDP. Again, I haven't had any DDP in a while (from a can or bottle anyway, the Chicken Espress here in Taylor has it from the soda fountain, as does the Monument Cafe in G'town). This would seem to be a regular DP product trying to copy DDP. I will say that this Dr Pepper product is very good, with a touch of cream soda/butterscotch/caramel flavor (as does DDP), and not near as much carbonation as regular DP (which I like but tears up the f'ing stomach ulcer I have). If I knew a grocery store that carried it, I'd easily make the trip, seems to be prevalent in the Brenham area, I can't remember. I may have seen it at Weikel's in La Grange too, a few years ago, I know it's been around at least 2 years, as we take our kids down to Houston every spring for an academic tournament, and I've gotten it the past 2 years in Brenham...

huh? Dublin DP is the same recipe, but with Imperial Cane sugar as sweetner rather than corn syrup. Other than that it is the same.
It is essentially what Mexican Coke is to American Coke. The taste difference, and the ONLY difference is in the sugar v. corn syrup.

I get that stuff in a can at the sandwich trailer (deli fresh) on Barton Springs Rd in the tri-cyclist parking lot. Jeanie makes a hell of a sandwich, and great soups too.

Dublin isn't the only bottling plant that uses the Imperial Sugar recipe, though it is the oldest. It is still bottled that way in Temple, Abilene and somewhere in North Carolina. Plano is where their corporate offices are located...I don't think it is actually bottled there.

My guess is it is getting to Brenham via Temple.

The main difference between the Dublin DP and the plastic bottle DP's that use pure cane sugar is probably just the labeling, I have had both and the Dublin style points out the fact that they were made at the Dublin plant. While The plastic bottle DP's cost the same as any other coke in the place and are less flashy, but full of flavor.

Alright you guys have me so interested in this now that I am going to have to consult a professional. One of the guys I go to church with is a higher up at the DP bottler in Temple. I am going to have to ask him and I will report back to y'all.

what you have seen is dublin dp.

They have this stuff at the citgo stations around town (in the plastic bottles) here in Temple/Belton.

Also, you can just get the can/small bottle format (still dublin) at HEB and wal-mart here really ******* cheap.

I swear I saw the Dr. Pepper you speak of at HEB off Braker the other day. Hard to believe since this HEB sucks, but I thought they have a few 6 packs.

They used to sell this at Central Market as well.

Either way, Dublin DP and DP made with the imperial sugar is one of the best things ever.

Alright,
I talked to a friend who works here at the Dr. Pepper bottler in Temple. I don't know his exact position, but he is fairly high up. DP is no longer bottled in Dublin. The last DP they bottled there was when they put it in the returnable glass bottles. The non returnable bottles, and the plastic bottles that you see on store shelves in Texas are all bottled in Temple. He said all the 'Dublin' DP comes from Temple. Also, the only recipe difference is that sugar is used instead of corn syrups.

And regarding the "Plano, texas" language on the 20 oz. bottles, I saw one yesterday and it just says "bottled under the authority of Dr. pepper Bottling Co., Plano, Texas". It doesn't say that it is actually bottled in Plano.

THEU:

The folks at the Dublin DP plant might dispute what your friend says. They still bottle DDP, but they only have a license to distribute it in a 44 square mile area around Dublin. That does not even get to Waco. Anything outside of that range that is made with sugar is not made at Dublin. But the Dublin plant is still operational. I've been there (nice tour). Your friend is confused, it still exists.

Wesser,
I am just reporting what I heard. I am not saing the guy isn't open to being questioned again. I know, and he said that the only thing at Dublin these days was the museum. Now, I used to live near Brownwood and drove through Dublin fairly regularly, and I thought they still bottled in small numbers. Maybe they do have that tiny area still.
He did tell me they ONLY have the ability to bottle in the returnable bottles, which are very rare now. Maybe they limited to that area and to retailers that they know will return bottles, or at least just produce enough really to sell/give at their tours. The latter makes the most sense to me in that they could then control their bottle returns. It was explained to me that each bottle type/size has to have different equipment to bottle, which is why Dublin can only do the returnable bottles, and only in one size. Maybe their distribution area really is mainly/just their museum.

With a 44 mile radius that would be my guess.

I am replying to this thread as an avid Dr. Pepper drinker.

I have considered Dublin Dr. Pepper the best soda drink in existence for the past decade. I have purchased the green-labeled "Imperial Sugar" variety since, and can say, without a doubt, that it is an imposter. I have done side-by-side analysis, not because I am a ********, but because I happened to have a supply of both versions at hand. There is no doubt. Green Dr. Pepper tastes like **** when compared to Dublin Dr. Pepper.

End of obsessive soda post.

Fanny,
No need to apologise at all. I think most here are truly interested in getting the best Dr. Pepper out there. We are all curious folk with taste buds, and I for one don't think you are any type of a ********! I actually was invited for a tour of the plant here in Temple, and plan on taking up the guy on it, and I will ask as many questions as I can.

I do want to know was your taste test glass bottle v plastic v can? I find glass bottles to be far superior to any other material for any drink. Beer or soda.

Good article.

"...The bottles that are now on sale at Central Market and Kroger stores are actually made at the Dr Pepper bottling plant in Temple, Texas. The Temple plant and one other Texas bottler, in Abilene, have decided to get in on this lucrative market. Both now make limited amounts of cane sugar-sweetened Dr Pepper along with the regular HFCS version. The bottles from Temple have an Imperial Pure Cane Sugar logo, but don't have the word "Dublin" above the Dr Pepper logo...'

Bootlegging DDP

You can get the imperial sugar DP at Wal-Mart in Giddings. I have also bought it in Lexington at the Liquor store. They call it the 10 2 & 4 DP. because of the old time label.

what about Passover Coke? Supposedly Coke makes its standard Coca-Cola with suger instead of corn syrup during the passover for limited locations. I think I read Chicago, New York, possibly Dallas, other places I can't remember is where the coke is distributed.

I toured the Dublin plant last summer, and that was the best DP I 've ever tasted. It really seemed to fill me up also. I didn't feel like I needed to drink another can right away like I do with most soft drinks.

Anyway, I would love to do a passover coke vs. Dublin DP taste test.

Passover Coke or Coke (that says Kosher for Passover) is availabe in grocery stores that have Jewish populations every year in late March early April. There are several stores in Houston near Meyerland and Bellaire that carry it. The HEB in Austin near Far West Blvd that has (or at least to have when I last lived in austin) a Kosher store carried it as well.

Not sure about back in Texas, but the Jason's Deli in Denver has it in their fountain...certainly a pleasant surprise when I found that out.
