Dr. Jarvik and Lipitor

HA- the other day one of the CV surgeons and anethesiologists were bitching about this after they brought back one of their patients to us.

doesn't he have his PhD in something like Biomedical engineering?
I think I also read somewhere that the only person to ever receive the Jarvik artificial heart died in like, 48 hours.

Do I have high cholesterol because I don't have lipitor in my system or do I have high cholesterol because I weigh 250 lbs and eat like hell?

BTW, from what I understand, he also stole much of the development plans for the original art. heart from a researcher at the Univ. of Utah.

Well, I always thought he looked like the mass-murderer from a few episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. Now, doesn't seem the comparison was that far off

Most doctors don't like Dr. Jarvik for a few reasons. One of them being he is sort of unethical. The first person to ever recieve the Jarvik artificial heart was actually not screened well for compatibility or the ability to extend their life. They rushed to install the heart because another doctor was close beating out Dr. Jarvik to be the first artificial heart transplant. Dr. Jarvik does have an M.D. but he is purely a researcher. So I would never take medical advice from him on anything... period.

maybe i don't know the whole story, but the way i learned it in my college intro biology class was franklin used x-ray crystallography to discover the double helical shape, and watson/crick showed how the a-t and c-g bases were paired. i thought that was how science was supposed to work, testing others ideas, refuting them if they're wrong, building upon them if they are repeatable...
