Police Academy is 9 months, I think your first year on the street you are considered a "rookie".

If she was hired in late '07 for Academy, she could still be in her first year out.
 
When I got married my biggest fear was losing my wedding ring since it is a relatively small item and I have tended to lose things. Well, it's 14 years later at that thing is still on my finger because a) it's important to me and b) I'm scared shitless of the retribution.

Now how on earth could anyone much less an officer leave their firearm at a damned dollar store?
 
It was his personal firearm, not his service weapon. He apparently left it in a fanny pack that was placed in a shopping cart.
