Downtown Austin traffic (Sat 5/10)

What was going on today to make downtown Austin traffic so insufferable? I attempted to cut over from MoPac on Cesar Chavez to head south on South First, and it was a zoo. There was some kind of run going on, but they don't usually wreak that kind of havoc. Coming back, I tried to cut up to Barton Springs Blvd on Bouldin, and hit a logjam again. I ended up going all the way south to Ben White and then over to MoPac. What a nightmare.

Welcome to downtown Austin on the weekend. It has been like this for about the past two months every time I try to navigate downtown on Saturday or Sunday.

I'm glad I moved out of Travis Heights.

I thought it was an anomaly, but everytime I'm downtown, it's bumper to bumper on Saturday I was naive enough to think that traffic was only bad on the weekdays

Well, the South 1st bridge was closed, which can't be "normal". Maybe it's construction. I couldn't get close enough to Congress to see if that bridge was open.

Yeah the South 1st bridge was completely closed to southbound traffic. I don't know why, they weren't working on it. caused a big pile up.

It was a ******* road race, which apparently happens every damn weekend now. I live downtown and it is really annoying.

I am not against road races - and run in some - but they can't keep shutting down the entire downtown of a major city every Saturday morning.

I drove back and forth from the southside to West Lynn and the Tavern & took Congress back down, didn't have any trouble.

I pretty much expect the roads to be closed due to some martathon, charity walk, festival, arts and crafts fair, protest, name the new reptile living in the water party or concert type thing. I am not willing to keep up with all that goes on nor where so I just expect it.

This is yet another reason why I ride my bike far more than I drive my car. It is out of control. But, part of me loves that I live in a city that has that much going on that is not bad for you.

What I don't get is that the interstate is often worse on weekends than it is on weekdays much of the day.
