kendall thompson may not be our next great buck linebacker. ghost of big roy over on burnt orange nation has a couple of fine write-ups from his coverage of the 7-on-7 tournament. he brings back glowing accounts of david ash and jaxson shipley, but also a glowing and surprising account of kendall's play.

gobr believes kendall's play was so strong at traditional linebacker ('showed the ability to range sideline to sideline and the speed to track down running backs out of the backfield'), particularly in coverage (as witnessed by numerous interceptions, one of which he returned for a score), that, while he has the size to play the buck position, he may remain at pure linebacker instead.

nice to have that option, huh?

what gobr is saying about all three horn commits dovetails nicely with what i read from numerous observers at the event. you need to read what he has to say.

here's also his main article on the event.

I saw hiim play one game in high school (playoffs against Mexia). He looked more like a linebacker who could read the flow of plays and drop in to coverage. I didn't see the burst that you might want from an edge rusher but again I saw one game and he wasn't being asked to do that. I wonder if the coaches have seen him in drills whether at a camp or spring practice or something when he has exhibited those skills.

that's no surprise to hear. what surprised me was those interceptions. all i had heard about him was him potential as a pass rusher. i didn't realize it, but he sounds perfectly comfortable in coverage. didn't know that about him.

muschamp very much values the ability to play multiple roles. kendall sounds like a perfect fit for what we are wanting to do.

This offers good deception opportunity like the Pittsburgh v. Cardinals super bowl pick 6.

A guy you think is going to rush is actually a coverage man.
