Can someone explain to me what the hell was going on? Did everything happen or not cuz everyone except the girl was kinda acting like they new about it but it just didn't happen. Or was it that none of it happened or something else.

He saw the future of what happens if he leaves his bed and dosen't get killed by the engine. He is f'd up, his GF gets killed as does the old lady.

He decides rather than let that happen, he allows himself to die.

Agreed, I watched this movie for the first time a coupla years ago with my ex, and before the movie her parents told me it was like a cult classic and an amazing movie...

I understood what the ending meant after it was over, but the whole time, I kept wondering how Jake Gylenhal (sp?) was able to ever get another role in a movie after that CENSORED of a movie...

One needs a basic understanding of wormholes and Einstein-Rosen bridge theory to grasp the premise of this film. I personally consider it to be one of my favorite movies, but then I am a string theorist at heart.

There is a lot of religious symbolism in the film. For example, by deciding to die to save everyone else, Donnie takes the role of Jesus. Note the movies playing in the theater in which he meets Frank: they are The Last Temptation of Christ and The Evil Dead.

There's much more than that though. That's one of the reasons this is such a great film.
