Saturday, while the game was going on, I made mention of him and what he and UTEP did. A true legend in a way that the word LEGEND is not even fitting. Rest in peace you well respected, deserving man.
I saw the scroll on ESPN late last night, as someone who went to high school in El Paso and went to UTEP for two years while Haskins was the coach it hit me pretty hard. My Dad used to go fishing with Haskins and he was as down to earth a guy as you could ever meet. A true southwestern hero. RIP
No one person has done more for the city of El Paso and UTEP than Coach Haskins.
He is a true legend and will be missed.
He really was a cool down to earth guy. Even though he could afford more, he always drove a GMC truck and lived in a modest home. My dad and father in law have fond memories of sharing a brew or 2 with the old coach. They had nothing but complamentary things to say about the man.
I frequented a cafe/bar that Don also enjoyed in the early '70s just outside El Pao. Had a few beers and shot some pool with him. As those above have already said, he was really nice guy and enjoyed sharing stories. Whether he meant to or not he changed sports in this country for the better.
I was still in El Paso when the news came out. My father-in-law, who played for Haskins, and his best friend, who worked for him, were both perfect examples of the magnitude of his loss. He was a HUGE part of El Paso and is one of a kind.
