Dolphins to select Jake Long

I'm pretty surprised they could actually get someone to sign for less guaranteed and overall money than the year before.

I really thought they'd go after Matt Ryan, but I guess they are content with throwing Josh McCown or John Beck out there and hoping for the best.

This pick definately shows that they think they can get Ronnie Brown back on the field for the season and rely on him even more to win it instead of having McCown or Beck win it for them. Definately not the pick I would have made, but that's why they are picking #1 overall.

The Dolphins are not one player away from contention. They are probably 3 drafts away from getting there, so taking a player like Long that will anchor thier line for (presumably) the next decade makes a ton of sense.

They can address QB and RB after they have a read on the pieces they have in place right now.

Dumb pick. Long isn't that good. Parcells may want to watch last year's tOSU game to see what happens when a NFL DE goes up against him.

Joe Thomas is now severely underpaid.

Joe Thomas is the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Not sure how the Long deal measures up to that one though. JT could be #2 now. I am sure he is not losing sleep over that. Rookie contracts are outta control.

I like Chris Long better. However, this pick is definitely better than a Matt Ryan pick. There's absolutely no real reason to believe Ryan will be any better than Beck w/ a good O-line.

Oh well. Parcells "draft master" status is about to go the way of "Big Game Bob."

If only Parcell's knew how to get a hold of ngnichols prior to this decision, he could have saved himself some serious embarrassment. I hope ngnichols takes it easy on the guy when they cross paths in the future....doing, you know.....NFL stuff.

Is Jake Long the right guy? I don't have a clue, but proclaiming that Matt Ryan is the clear choice #1 choice at QB is laughable. Ryan might end up being a very good NFL QB, but I have seen nothing out of the guy to make me believe he is better than any number of college QBs that never panned out. I also doubt that there isnt anyone coming through the college ranks in the next couple of years that will compare favorably to Ryan. There will be another "Matt Ryan" next year, and another the year after that. If you want to pick a QB #1 overall, I think you have to be certain he is gonna be a stud (Peyton, Palmer) because you are gonna be forced to play him in a position that is so important. In my opinion Ryan is more likely to be a David Carr or Alex Smith type than Peyton Manning. I realize the Dolphins will eventually need a QB, but I wouldnt waste the #1 pick on Ryan. Draft a QB later, wait til next year, or get one through free agency.

I think Ryan will be a good to great NFL QB. However drafting a QB as a top 5 or even top 10 pick can be risky. Many of those top QB picks take years to pan out and some of them are complete busts. It is just about the hardest position to have success at much less longterm success. I think they took a safer pick at a big position of need.

This year there are not a ton of quality QB's, RB's, or WR's on the draft board. Less than a handful of each that I think teams would like to give a 1st or 2nd round pick to. For the type of money that top 5 picks are getting now you either have to really want to take a gamble on one of those few guys or take a safer pick at another position of need. Dolphins don't need RB. There isn't a WR on the board that they would want to take with the #1 overall like there was last year. Long is about a sure thing at OL as you will get. Everyone is high on him. He is signed early and will be there for all practices. Good pick.

Let me ask you...Matt Ryan.....Great quarterback....Or the greatest quarterback?

How many sacks did tOSU get against Michigan? Can't find the number but when they only managed 76 yards passing, I figure Henne spent a fair amount of time on his butt.

Well, you can disagree with me and that is your choice, but I think it is a MAJOR risk to assume that Ronnie Brown is going to be totally 100% when the season starts and will be able to carry the load, as in like LJ 400+ carries load, for that team because those two QB's ain't worth squat.

They've traded away the only two offensive weapons they did have in Randy McMichael and Chris Chambers so an offensive lineman doesn't do **** when you don't have a guy worth a damn to protect and that guy doesn't have anyone worth a damn to throw it to.

But NG...The opposite argument is heard all the time. Doesnt matter how good the guys are at skill positions if the line sucks....You also will hear that no defense can cover forever so a line gives a QB enough time that eventually he is going to find someone open.

Also, all this is assuming Matt Ryan turns out to be some sort of Pro Bowler and that's far from certain. I'm not sold on him at all. I'd burn a 2nd rounder on him but the top pick in the draft?

yeah, Matt Ryan is really not that good at all...I don't know why NG has a fascination with him

now Ryan may be better than Beck or McCown, but that certainly doesn't mean he's worth a #1 overall pick

If you have the chance to shore up your offensive line, you have to take it. You can be sucessful with an average quarterback.

Quarterbacks are a crap shoot. A top left tackle or any proven offensive lineman is a relatively safe bet. Ryan could be a superstar, but he could be a bust. The uncertainty is much less with a lineman. I think you have a much much better idea of what you are getting with a lineman vs. a QB.

You guys have your opinions and thats fine. QB's are crapshoots, but so is every other spot on the field. Robert Gallery was a "Solid, Can't Miss" OT too in 2004 when he went #2 overall to the Raiders. How's that working out for them?

Ehhh, not so good.

I actually Brian Brohm has a chance to a better QB than Matt Ryan. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if the Dolphins drafted him with the first pick of the second round if he's available. The scuttlebutt out of Miami (at least, by so called South Florida sports reports) suggests that Parcells doesn't really see John Beck as a reliable solution to the QB problem.
