D'OH SPURS D'OH!

Uh-oh. What the hell is going on here? This doesn't look like the team that was dominant through most of the regular season. Is it age catching up with them? Running out of gas, injuries taking their toll? I haven't watched any of the games (or any playoff game at all for that matter) so I'm not sure how the Spurs are finding themselves down 3-1 to Memphis. What are you folks who are actually watching the NBA seeing?

They just look slow. They're not getting the production out of their stars as they should be, because those guys are matched up on faster, younger players. I think the most telling stat of Game 4 was the -26 of George Hill (Memphis scored 26 more points than the Spurs during Hill's 29 minutes of play). Pops is not coming up with a lineup that creates favorable matchups. That's what happens when you're old and slow.

They're old and falling apart. Memphis is young, and very talented. SA has reached the point where their playoff savvy, and experience doesn't outweigh or even balance out their age. The era is over, the same may be true with LA. Memphis, OKC are the future of the west, the changing of the guard may not completely happen this year, but it's right around the corner.

Yeah, I think the changing of the guard is right around the corner too. It's been a great run for the Spurs; I just wonder how long it will take before they are able to put a championship contending team together again.

If you just look at wins and losses, the Lakers also could have been said to have run out of gas late in the season.

I'm not sure that's what's happened to the Spurs. It's not like the young guys are playing well and the older guys are just letting them down. I think they overachieved in the regular season relative to how good of a team they actually are.

I'm not arguing with what's been said, Memphis is younger, more athletic, and they've got several guys that can hit jumpers unlike the spurs. But I will say this was a bad matchup; the Spurs would've done much better against just about anyone else in the west.

Also, the Ginobli injury played a huge role in giving momentum to Memphis. If Ginobli is healthy and plays game 1, we probably win both home games. Then the pressure on Memphis is different. The Spurs might still have squeaked out the series win. But the synergistic effects of the Ginobli injury have destroyed any Spurs rhythm and exposed all the other players that can't create their own shot (almost everyone but Parker and Neal).

Also, if Parker had played any kind of a decent game in the first 2 losses they wouldn't have been losses..

I finally saw some NBA action last night. What a great pair of games to see - the Spurs dramatic win and the Thunder (with KD) closing out Denver.

I'm really interested to see whether it was just delaying the inevitable as Golf suggests, or whether the heartbreaking loss plays on the psyche of the younger Grizzlies to the point that they don't play their best in game 6. Should that happen, can the Spurs pull it out to force game 7? I think the odds have to favor Memphis, but you just never know what kind of momentum can be gained (or lost) because of a single dramatic, clutch shot. Anyway, it'll be very interesting to see.

even if they somehow get past Memphis in these next two games, they got a rested and young Thunder team waiting for them.

Not going to happen. I think the Spurs know it too.
