Dog Trainer in Austin

Saw the other thread and thinking about using one to help train my dog. Any tips on the reasons for/against the different types of training available would be great. For those that have used one of the places where you leave your dog for a couple of weeks, what are your thoughts on it?

kuru-
i talked a little about the people i used in the post above- taurus training. ithey have a location on south lamar and one on mcneil and 183. left my dog there for two weeks when he was about a year old, and was a little worried about it, but i actually decided i would take him when i was going out of town - that way it was like he was boarding and getting trained at the same time. they are really great, do an excellent job, and they will give you (the person) a lot of training when it's over so you can understand how all the training works and keep up the training at home. also lets the dog get well socialized with other dogs. and the benefit is that taurus has day care and boarding, so your dog is already familiar with the people and the place. my dog goes to day care there once a week, on days when i am going to be out of the house all day. i feel bad on the weeks when i dont take him! he loves it there. they have big play yards and put the dogs in size-temperament-appropriate groups. at the north location they are building a pool so that the dogs can swim during the summer when it's hot out! i also like knowing that he can board there; a lot of places keep the dogs in kennels all day and only take them out a couple of times to go to the bathroom. at taurus, they get to go in and out all day for play times, even if they are boarding and not there for play day. my dog's trainer was melanie, one of the owners, and she was really great with him and taught me a lot about training. i highly recommend them (obviously!). they are a little pricey, but well worth it if you love your dog as much as i do! their website isThe Link
PM me if you have any questions about it!

Count me as another satisfied Taurus-ite. Their "doggie boot camp" isn't cheap, but it works. Like TT, we also sent our spastic Springer pup there when gone on a vacation to lessen the financial blow. The first two weeks (on-leash training) went great, so a few months later we sent the dog back for another two weeks (off-leash training). Worth every penny, if you've got it to spare.

What degree of training can I expect if he is already responding well to commands, but not so great when gets excited? I really wanted to do the training myself, but I go months where I have almost zero time and it seems that you need to reinforce it daily for a while.

One of my main problems is that when someone is walking their dog by our yard (or sometimes just people without a dog), it looks like he is about to climb over the fence in some sort of half dominance, half overly friendly moment. At this point he doesn't really listen to me and will just avoid me when I walk over there. He never gets into fights at the dog park and is really is one of the most sociable dogs at the dogpark with people and other dogs, but he still probably freaks people out when they walk by our house because they don't know him.

He is pretty smart, already responds to a few commands pretty well and is good with fetch&return and will sit at my side until I throw his ball again. He is still a little spastic when people come over, but never has jumped up on someone in the house and only a couple of times in the front yard when he was already worked up before people came over.

- Yes, reinforcement is key. Even if it's only 10-15 minutes a night when you get home, you've got to find time to do it or the training won't stick. But you already know that.

- My dog is a 9.0 on the hyper Richter scale. She'll chase anything that runs, jump on friendly people, etc., but not when I don't let her. Pre-Taurus, I couldn't let her off a leash for fear she'd run into the street and get smacked. Now, she can be chasing ______ (pick your favorite chase prey) through the yard, field, etc., and if I give her the right verbal command, she'll stop dead in her tracks and come back. That, to me, is worth the price alone.

- I'm sure they can tailor something to your needs. Call 'em. (man, I need to get some credit for this next time I drop my dog off for play day!).

i had a similar deal with the hyperactivity - but i think my dog has sort of grown out of it, with the help of the training. i need some credit for taurus too! i have sent 4 friends there!
