Getting a lil' pup from the pound and want to get take him to obedience school or a dog trainer in town to learn the basics.

Any suggestions?

Petsmart has them. They are pretty informal; you go along and they teach you how to teach the dog. Sit, stay, heel... that's about it.

Hit up the UT Informal classes. I have heard good things about them. Important: patience, persistance and consistency. Your dog lives to please you. You just have to show it how to do so.

If you're feeling charitable the Austin Humane Society has group obedience and puppy kindergarten classes for a donation. Look on their website here for more information.

I volunteer there and know the trainers they use. They are also volunteers who are certified APDT trainers. I took one of my dogs through the class too and I think it was very beneficial for the both of us.

May be a little far for you, but i took my dog to Triple Crown Dog academy for something like a 4 week 8 session class. The Link

Not like my dog acts like the Dobermans on Magnum PI, but 8 years later people are always commenting on how well behaved my dog is.

I've also heard good things about Dog Boys. The Link But don't have personal experience with them, as the Triple Crown sessions were all i needed for my pup.

Good luck.

You really need to specify what part of town you are in because convenience is going to be key and there are a lot of good options on different sides of town.

Near Lakeline Mall I would say Hearts and Paws.
