Dog injury ...

I have a 6 year old Boston Terrier ... super hyper and active. Went to sleep after playing ball with her Sat night, woke up Sunday morning and she is limping severely on her front leg.

There doesn't seem to be anything in her paw, and there doesn't appear to be discomfort to the touch. Just issues getting around. She is able to put "some" pressure on the leg. She's actually able to go up/down stairs, and even tries to get me to play with her even though she's hopping on 3 legs.

I called the vet today, they said to give her a few days, that it could be a sprain or broken/fractured toe. They said if her paw was broken she'd be in much more discomfort and pain. Anyone experienced this with a dog?

Thanks.

I don't know, but if it turns out to be an ortho problem, take your dog to Dr. Bill Dudley. He's the best...

They can bruise or "burn" the pads on a paw, which bothers them for awhile, then they get over it, but it could be a cut pad, a spliter in there, or something worse like any athlete gets-twisted ankle or broken bone, something like that.

I have a pug and its happened to him a couple of times.

He limps around but I couldn't seem to pinpoint the source of the discomfort. Anyways, after a few days, it went away both times. I'm thinking it was kinda like a crick in the neck, like he slept on it wrong or something.

To any who may have dogs that have passed the midpoint of their life expectancy, we experienced the same thing with our Brittany Spaniels as they got older. In their case (as with many of the breed) the issue was arthritis. We were actually able to greatly increase their mobility by administering a Glucosamine/Chondroitin tablet (folded in a piece of cheese of course) which seemed to greatly relieve the dogs' discomfort.

It's a temporary solution of course, but at least for awhile it allowed our dogs to be their old selves again, even if only for one or two more years. I still miss them to this day.

Thanks to all ...

She is much better, still slightly limping. After hours of puppy dog eyes I played with her yesterday, she seemed to be walking more gingerly this morning.

I'm just going to have to ignore her pleads and make her sit out until fully healed.

We have a cattle dog that has injured herself chasing a ball so many times that she has a bone spur on one ankle. She's also torn off both her front dew claws multiple times. It drives her crazy not to be able to play for a few days, when she hurts herself. If she's driving us all crazy wanting to play, but seems to need a little more time to heal, I wrap the ankle with that self sticking bandage stuff and throw the ball really short. It lets her get a little play time in without putting too much new strain on the injury.
