Dog Aggression

I have two dogs, both of which my wife and I adopted between the ages of 1.5-2 years old. Both are fairly well trained, but the black lab (older ~3yrs now, female) is very dominant.

She gets along very well with our other dog, but ocassionally tries to dominate the other dog. She does have some separation anxiety issues and is fairly intolerant of other dogs, i.e., she doesn't pick fights with other dogs, and actually tries to get out of the situation by moving away, but, in some situations with our friends dogs, when she's not able to get away from the other dogs (younger, just want to play) she'll snap at them or bite them and is pretty aggressive about it. She will also growl at other dogs if they get near her.

I'm looking for a trainer in Houston who can break her of this habit. I think she's just insecure (I believe her previous owners beat her some and left her outside all the time) and she gets threatened by other dogs, and therefore tries to be dominant.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as far as training techniques...its difficult because I don't want to put other dogs in a bad situation where they might possibly be bitten. I also don't think its something we can easily solve this problem without assistance, since she gets along with our other dog.

If anyone has any suggestions for trainers in the Houston area who might be able to help, as well as how much they cost, I'd appreciate it.

Jim, from Rover Oaks, is really amazing. I can't remember his last name, or how much he charges - he worked with my parents dog for awhile and helped a lot with her dominance and other issues. i think they have a website -The Link or something like that.
good luck

Tenacious...thanks for the info. I called them yesterday and got the info on prices. I'm going to call back today to talk with Jim to find out what he would recommend. He looks to be extremely qualified, so hopefully it will work out.

Have you ever caught an episode of "The Dog Whisperer" on one of the cable channels ... probably Animal Planet. This guy is absolutely amazing in helping you understand dog behavior and has addressed this a couple of times on his show. I would also recommend Rover Oaks for a local trainer. I've heard a lot of good things about him.
