Does the success that the cougars are having muddy the waters for Jeffcoat.

could the success sway him to goto houston where his father is to help right the ship of a young team that has some promise?

No

Ordinarily I would answer yes to this but in this case I don't think so. The thing is if Houston keeps up this success this year and next year can you imagine the offers that will be coming to their head and assistant coaches. Remember Houston had a good coach that went to Baylor so it could happen again. It is a shame though.

The younger Jeffcoat's interest in Cougar High is more a courtesy to dad than anything else. He's a bigtime talent, and bigtime talent goes to bigtime programs. He's keeping his leanings to himself, but it's probably gonna come down to us or USC, after he sorts out all of his options. Besides, dad and Coach Sumlin are more than likely to be at a much higher profile job by the time the younger Jeffcoat is ready to play in college.

the worrisome thing for us would be if sumlin and his staff gets hired by some major program after the season is over.

Look. Nothing is impossible. That being said, how often do 5 star recruits sign with non-BCS schools not named Notre Dame?

Answer: Almost never

Houston IS in a bad situation .. Briles is an alum, and he left! What do they do to get someone to win and stay?

The word down here is that they're going to break the bank to keep Sumlin. Whether that works, we'll see. But he's gotten himself into a good situation in a lot of ways, and UH - like all institutes of higher learning these days - is desperately looking for ways to boost interest and money into the school via athletics.

If they can keep Sumlin and get his assistants some sort of raise, Mr. Jeffcoat may stay (though I think he's looking for a more high-profile, perhaps professional, job). And if Dad Jeffcoat stays, UH is as logical a destination for Son Jeffcoat as any other.

They'll certainly be comfortable with the staff and the city, and Houston can point to a recent history of getting players to the NFL. Jackson may see it as an opportunity to play big fish in a small pond.

And frankly, no matter where he plays, his skills will be attractive to the pros. That is, if he's as good as advertised, the NFL won't be any less interested in him if he comes from USC, Texas, UH, Oklahoma, or whereever. He'll get his stats, and he'll make his combine numbers.

I think we have as good a shot as any, but we can't dismiss UH out of hand. Our other high-profile DE in this class was very seriously considering TCU over us at one point.

On our side, from what I hear: Jackson is very much a "Mack Brown guy", and vice versa. I think there's a comfort level there that wasn't around between Jake Matthews, his dad and our staff.

With all the talent coming out of Houston, UH should always be a top 25 team. And besides, why shouldnt UH be able to keep a coach? Its the 4th largest city in the country, is a football hotbed, and lets not forget that Miami sucked for a long time, but now they are considered a college football destination. At some point, if UH plays its cards right, it can become the next Miami. That of course would give Texas some problems.

My father in law went to U of H and is a big supporter of the school and football in particular. I think that they feel like they have found a great fit in Sumlin and I am not sure he would be that quick to move. He has the opportunity to really build a program there, and they will be willing to pay him to be a winner.
Also, I find the comparision of location to U of Miami pretty funny. Consider the neighbourhoods right next to USC? I have a friend who visited USC to go there purely for academics and he said one reason he didn't go there was the area was just so awful he was worried about living there.
I think that U of H can build a nice program not unlike TCU. TCU is usually ranked, unless they get beat by a top flight BCS Confernce team. U of H has now beaten 2 of the top 4 BIG XII south teams from last year. I don't think that is anything at all to sneeze at.

achoo!

Cougar High has the same issues that Rice and Baylor have. They just don't have the alums. Add in the fact that many of their graduates latch on to other schools and that both Baylor and Rice are in better locations.

And personally yes, I think any person would rather live on Rice's campus then cougar highs.

Lets just concede that the young Mr. Jeffcoat is being pulled in several directions by family ties and other recruiting factors. Sure, UH has got to be one of his considerations.
I hope he picks a place somewhat central to his sister's school and his father's, a place like Austin, Texas.

Has anyone said anything about the players Sumlin is winning w/ are not his. He may be a great coach but you have to have great aths. these kids were recruited by briles. He may be are great recruiter but UH if Sumlin leaves will be screwed because kids will think that as soon as a coach wins he is leaving.

If Sumlin and Houston win out, he's gone, probably to the SEC. Houston can't afford to keep him. He won with Briles recruits, but it will matter not...

I like the way the Jeffcoats have handled this in a low key manner. They have said that it is Jackson's decision, and it seems that way. He may be conflicted, but it doesn't seem like he is being "pulled
' toward UH.

So much for cougar high's success...Jeffcoat's decision apparently got just a bit easier. Thanks, Texas Western.

Make fun of Texas Western all you want, but they have the most recent NCAA hoops crown of any Texas school.

hey, i'm all for UH being a good program consistently. but the next miami? i don't see any way in the world that happens. not until they play in a good conference.

miami rose in the day of independents. thos days are over.

First of all, Sumlin's recruiting classes have ranked better than Briles and his recruiting class at UH this year is better than Briles' at Baylor. And that is with Baylor stealing Amhad Dixon from UT to come to Baylor.

What UT needs to do is get Jeffcoat on our staff. Now, that is going to be tough because Oscar Giles is our defensive ends coach right now. But, we at UT have big pocketbooks, and I'm sure we could 'promote' Giles to some kind of AD role to open up a spot for Jim Jeffcoat to come in.

Well UTEP certainly made UH look awful. I agree that a better conference would help UH as well. UH's location however makes them a sleeping giant. With the right mixture, which isnt the same as Wyoming, UH can and should be a power. Heck, Boise State is competitive year in and year out, and they are in Idaho (and yes, its a beautiful place)
