Does Gregg Popovich get the credit he deserves?

Maybe it has to do with San Antonio being a small market, or his distaste for attracting attention to himself (unlike the owner of the Mavericks). Maybe it's his ornery personality (although his dry sense of humor is better than most outside of San Antonio realize). But Greg Popovich is one of the all-time great coaches in the NBA. He's only behind Phil Jackson, IMO in the modern era of great NBA coaches... and it's probably a fair debate that he has done more with less than PJ.

You are welcome to call this series a big Mavs choke, or another example of Dirk being "soft" (which I do not agree with by the way) or whatever other excuses Mavs fans use to avoid giving credit where it is due (especially as it relates to San Antonio)... but one thing so far is certain... Greg Popovich vs Rick Carlisle is a massive mismatch.

Dick Vitale agrees with me: Dick Vitale: Popovich deserves more credit

couldnt agree with you more, and if it wasnt for the lakers and phil jackson, pop would be considered among the best of all time in everyones eyes. What he has done since 98 is phenominal and really can't be matched by anyone including phil jackson.

Then again, neither does Tim Duncan who IMO will go down as the greatest power forward of all time. And it isnt really even close in my eyes.

I don't like the guy but not for any good reason.

He is ugly, I guess.

He is also a hell of a basketball man and he has all my respect. When he decided to fire the guy he succeeded (Hill, I think), a guy who had won like 50+ games, I thought he was hasty. Then it turns out he was taking over as coach. I thought that was fishy. Turns out he is a great coach AND a great GM.

Anyone who knows basketball has to give the guy top props. His track record allows for no other interpretation.

Pop is an excellent coach. I think he gets all the credit he deserves. Jackson you might argue doesn't get the credit he deserves. People usually look at his teams and say "yeh but you have Michael, Scotty, Shaq, and Kobe".

i dig his no nonsense, i couldn't give a f style.

Will be interesting what he does in the post Duncan era, retire i would imagine.

Pop doesn't get much credit because he doesn't ask for it. He knows the only credit he needs is rings and trophies.

And I was among the disgruntled when he fired Bob Hill and took over as head coach. The rest as they say, is history.

Just as an aside, I'm pretty sure Pops Championship to Book ratio is a lot higher than Phil Jacksons.

Last night Pop's team played like a bunch of dogs.

Spurs looked like they did not belong on the court with the Mavs.

How much does he make???
That will tell you if he is getting the respect he deserves.
Regardless, he couldn't get his team (for whatever reason) to even show up last night. I don't know how to rate that.

One of my fav coaches in the league. Curious how long he sticks around after Duncan's gone...it will be sad when Pop finally retires.

Warrior had the tongue and cheek icon. I think some of you missed his internet humor. Last night doesn't mean jack unless the Mavs can win game 6. Personally I don't think the series is over, but Spurs still have the upper hand.

Pop as others have said is in the top 2 of active NBA coaches. I do think he gets the credit he deserves. Everyone on TV seems to think he's in that top tier class.

wadster, i guess you are right. Warrior's post was so dead on Mav Fan-ish i bought it hook line and sinker.

You can never judge any NBA coach, player, owner by one game. Pop's body of work will stand for long time. However, if the Mavs are fortunate enough to win the next two, that'll make two straight years he's lost in first round. But, if he advances to 2nd round, as he's bound to do, this will be considered a good season for the coach given the physical and health problems they have had.

I have to admit he's made some bold unexpected moves. Sitting his stars in the final game of the season and then pulling them last night. He must have plenty of confidence going home for Game 6, otherwise why would he concede Game 5 in the middle of the 3rd quarter? You just don't see coaches thinking like that, but that's what makes the great ones great.

Hook'em!!!
