Does Apple want a smartphone monoploy?

Not exactly new news, but the ramifications of this could be quite drastic seeing as this area of industry is exploding.

Steve Jobs fought with Bill Gates for years and was never able to challenge him in the computer industry. Apple made a huge push to have Microsoft broken up by the US government that eventually failed. It just seems a little odd that now that the roles are reversed he is trying to crush the little guy.

Apple tries to win on margin, not on units sold, they aren't going get a monopoly in large part because they aren't trying for one. They have seen electric growth because they released something incredibly intuitive and they are reaping the rewards of that. As their competitors start eating into the UI concepts Apple's advantage in the general market will dwindle to just the people willing to overpay for simplicity. Apple will end up with a smaller percentage of units in the market but a high percentage of total sales in the US (Apple has never been competitive internationally).

If that sounds dismissive, I don't mean it to be, smartphones are FAR better now than they were 3 years ago and that is almost entirely because of Apple.

Thought this was funny.

Apparently some Taiwanese company is suing Apple because they invented multi-touch...

Here is a news flash, multi touch was developed decades ago and is so old and ubiquitous in use that no one gives a **** who really invented it.

I'm still interested to see if someone is going to buy Palm -- or rather, their technology and patents, which I think should be very valuable. Their webOS is actually quite good from everything I've read about it.

Best bet seems to be HTC, but whether they have the capital to make a serious offer remains to be seen. There has been some speculation that Apple might, but since they wouldn't really have any interest in using Palm's patents, they'd have to be purchasing with the intent of closing shop... which seems an overly prickish act even for Jobs.
