Dr. Alexei Koudinov is the editor of the Israel-based Doping Journal Web site. When he sees Michael Phelps race, he sees a cheater. I asked him to explain why and he shared the essay you'll find below. He titled it, "Doping by the pool invalidates Phelps Beijing 2008 Olympic swimming gold, world records."

I'm thinking that everything in that article is correct and that Phelps should keep his medals and world records.

I'm going to go buy an iPod.

This is the reason that I've stopped automatically respecting people with letters before or after their names. Let them talk and then judging becomes simple.

1. My understanding is that doping is the use of performance enhancing drugs. A drug is a substance. The compression waves sent through the air by an ipod is not a 'substance'. This guy is wading out of his kiddie pool.

2. Artificially enhancing the uptake, transport or delivery of oxygen is a very vague wording. Does that mean you can't take vitamin pills?

3. They usually have music playing through the loudspeakers in those arenas. You better shut those off and also, no national anthems.

4. The crowd cheering will give an adrenaline boost to athletes who know they have lots of fans there, which is outside participation.

Shall we go on with these babyish rules? We have important rules that concern drug use, age, and equipment. Let's maintain a degree of maturity here.
