Dobie Theater closing Sunday

Yet another fond memory of my UT days vanishing. I remember seeing all kinds of cool movies (and a few bad ones) at the Dobie. Plus we had the Varsity and the UT film program too. Where the heck do the kids go for movies now?

kind of sad, but even back in 1986, as a freshman, i remember entering one of the theaters and being disappointed at the size of the screen and theater.

It's now 2010 and i can only imagine what kids, from all around the suburbs of Texas, who have grown up with large flat screen HD TVs in their media rooms, think when they go into a Dobie theater for the the first time.

That being said. I viable movie theater near campus would be great. I guess the Union still shows stuff right?

Sad. I had the same movie options you did when I was at UT.

I guess kids watch movies on TV or their computers. There is also a youth prejudice against black and white. I saw so many classics on the big screens of the UT campus.

I also saw a lot of movies at Dobie. Early on, I went to a midnighter there. Abbey Road was playing over the speakers and there was a wild slideshow of art and photos before the movie started. It felt so different from regular theaters.

RIP Les Amis, Nothing Strikes Back, Varsity Theater, Garner and Smith, Quackenbush, and now Dobie Theaters. The drag may one day become just another avenue in Anywere, USA.

I remember seeing the RE-RELEASE of The Last Tango in Paris at Dobie in the early 1980s. They also showed the Opening of Misty Beethoven......errrrrrr artsy movies?

Really unfortunate. I lived at Dobie my freshman year (1987) and went to the theater all the time during my time at UT.

I read the news in the paper this morning and thought, "well, crap. Another great place shutting down." Then, I remembered that I hadn't been there to support them with a ticket in at least 3-4 years. I guess part of the blame goes to people like me.

My freshman year 1994/1995 they had a 1 year reunion where a lot of the cast of Dazed & Confused came to a big party. They showed it on one of there screens for a over a year. Yes the theatres were a redesigned several times but they already were crap compared to the hook-ups in our dorm rooms.

Also remember watching The Crow at midnight on a Saturday night at the Union and many foreign flicks at Hogg during the summers

Well, at least there is momentum behind keeping the space for independent films with an emphasis on local talent and events. The Dobie has strayed from that in the past few years and it would be nice to see a return to its roots. It may have a different name but it will be the same spirit so that is good.

A buddy & I took in this little jewel there in the 80's before the county attorney got an injunction against it. We weren't going to let The Man tell us what to watch. About halfway through, we decided censorship wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Saw The Big Chill at Dobie. Drunken couple two rows back with wine bottles in tow and a general disdain for theater audience protocols.

RIP Flapjack Canyon, GM Steakhouse & Mad Dogs & Beans. There was a burger joint in the basement of the “s-tology” building, but the name escapes me. Kid behind the counter would perform a minor contortionist act loading the burger on to the bun. In my Dad’s days on campus Flapjack was a Night Hawk.

I remember watching the Passion of the Christ at Dobie on a Friday afternoon. The projectionist and I were the only ones in the theatre.

First movie I saw there was 'The Groove Tube', in 1974...many memories...with my wife and my kids, over the years. I hope they can give it a new life...if not it will be sorely missed. Lots of movies are just meant to be viewed in that atmosphere.

I saw quite a few movies there during my first stint at UT, 1971 to 1975. I didn't see The Groove Tube, but that was precisely typical of the movies that showed there during that era.

EDIT: Oh yeah, they used to show slides of Magritte paintings before the movies began.

Apparently later on, in the 90's, it was still a very vital theater, hosting festivals and notables such as Quentin Tarantino. I hope it can continue under different management, someone committed to keep it an arthouse. Landmark was no longer willing to do that.

Night Hawk, Holiday House, G&M Steakhouse, Dobie Theatre, University Bank; businesses on that stretch of Guadalupe in the early/mid 70's that I remember well.

I think they should tear down the whole building and put a mosque there.

Seriously though, that building, the dorm rooms and all, just sucks. It needs to be overhauled, or uphauled.

I saw The Groove Tube when it came out at the theater by the Co-op - I believe it was the Texas? It may have been on the other side of where 2-J's was and Chamber's before that. I know the Varsity was up the street and that wasn't it and it definitely wasn't at the Dobie.

I haven't been inside Dobie Mall or the dorm for several years, but it didn't look too bad to me the last time. (Other than the actual lack of any interesting shops or businesses.) I never liked Dobie's food court redesign there in the early '90s, I liked it much better when it had individual "restaurants" like the old McDonalds, BK, Nikki's etc. And when the old Power Play arcade was downstairs. The Unicorn giftshop upstairs, and the Chippery. The mall used to have a homey, comfortable atmosphere.

The dorm was fully renovated in '89, when I was a freshman, so it all seemed new and clean while I was a student. What's wrong with it now? It's only been 20 years!

Edit: Can someone please tell me how to quote a post (or part of a post) that I am replying to? Almost every forum I've ever seen has a "quote" button or feature, or automatically quotes for you when you reply to a specific message. But I can't find it here.

Was introduced to Monty Python & the Holy Grail there as freshman. However, nostalgia is no reason to keep a piece of crap theater open.
