when you stay at a hotel?

I am blessed with an awesome husband, who, during miid-terms, allows me to stay in a hotel downtown so that I can study without interruption from the kiddos....

I went to class today and left a note for the cleaning staff. I asked that they change the sheets on the bed I slept in and if they could leave a couple extra towels. When I returned to the hotel, the maid had not made it to my room yet. I was working at the desk when she arrived to clean. Her supervisor was with her and apologized that her staff was late cleaning my room. I didn't really think much of it....someone's room gets cleaned last, right? I told the supervisor that this was no problem. Remember, they had not entered yet and had not seen the note I left requesting the bed change and new towels. Even though I was present when she arrived, I left the note on the bed. She changed the sheets and cleaned the bathroom, leaving a bunch of extra towels. She took the note I left, but placed my tip on the bedside table. While she was vacuuming, I slipped the tip onto her cart.

My theory behind this is that I am sure they are not often recognized for their work and I think it would suck to have to pick up after people all day, everyday. I can only imagine how most people treat their hotel rooms.....

It was not a giant tip and I didn't have any ulterior motive. I mean, I am talking like 5 bucks.

About an hour after the maid leaves, Room service knocks on the door and delivers a "complimentary" bottle of wine. I am not a wine drinker and I have no idea if this is a decent wine, but the hotel is a trendy spot with a free wine tasting every night at 5:00 pm. I say thank you and set the bottle aside. Then about 20 minutes later, the staff arrives with a "spa cart" (one of the promos for this place is that they will place a cart in your room upon request with different themes.....one cart has chocolate for the chocolate lover, a relaxation cart has aroma therapy soaps and candles, a coffee lover cart has a special blend and a book to read......its a theme thing and it is not an additional cost on top of the room. However, I had not requested any cart.

So, for 5 bucks, I got a clean room and an apparent staff black market bottle of wine and a bottle of bubblebath and body lotion. Apparently that was enough to make the maid's day and for her to tell her coworkers. Sometimes, I need to remind myself that very little effort can mean a lot to other people.

I try to remember to pay it forward. It is a really nice feeling inside when you are rewarded for doing something out of the goodness of your heart without expectations, and you are pleasantly surprised by its return.

always, but a lot less at a la quinta or similar type. Haven't stayed in a motel 6 since the CWS when no rooms were to be had in Omaha in 04. I'll never do that again. my theory of tipping? If someone is cleaning my toliet, I ought to pay them directly.

Took a student-group trip to a foreign country while I was in high school. My two roommates and I lucked into a suite for our accomodations. We played "rock star" and trashed the place. We left a really good tip, but it wasn't much out of our pockets considering the exchange rate at the time.

Looking back, I probably should have left some tips at the hotels my fraternity pledge class got for TX/OU weekend.

I would tip them now, but i just never think to do it because I'm never there when they are. Guess i just take it for granted that the room will be clean when i get back, which is one of the reasons you stay in a hotel in the first place.

Always. Even if it's only a couple of dollars. I read somewhere that a dollar a day per person staying in the room was appropriate.

That seems just a bit low, so we usually try to do three to five per person per day.

Always.

You tip a waiter 15%-20% for bringing you food don't you?

So why wouldn't you tip a poor woman $5 for cleaning up after you?

When it comes right down to it, person to person, yes I do. However, it pisses me off that I "need" to do this. Why doesn't the ******* Hilton family pay their staff appropriately? It's not like Paris has a student loan she needs to pay off.

Always, no matter the class of hotel. However, I never tip in person, I always just leave a total of $2 or $3 bucks times days stayed.

also, do not jsut tip at the end. leave a nice tip the first morning of the stay. your room will be 100% nicer, cleaner, extra towels etc, for the stay.
