Do you feel sucker punched?

This is not meant to be left, right, Black,White, Hispanic, Asian or anything else. Just do you feel sucker punched after all that has happend this year? I have. I started out 2020 on 2/4/2020 in Methodist hospital with blood clots. Left leg, both lungs and pulmonary artery. ICU 12 days, 24-48 hours away from death. I wake up every day wondering if the clots are going to get me. One of the biggest things that I did at the hospital was I went to Hornfans and anything Longhorns to lift my spirits along with praying. I love the Horns. I am one of those crazy people that sing the eyes to the players when we lose big. All of this just rips my guts out. People have lost friends and family to covid, and lost their jobs. I believe we all were looking forward to the Longhorns playing football in the fall so we could take our minds off of all of this. The very sad part is, now I don't know if I care if the Horns even play this year or ever again.

Well I was at the Miami cotton bowl.....

Hopefully someone at UT will grow a pair. We may have to be Penn State or Baylor and just let players leave. But when the smoke clears a few years later we will have a better, more disciplined team.

Duke,

Let me assure you that our voices and opinions have been heard.

Deloss used to complain that people were angry, but that he could do nothing without our input. "Give me some ammunition". He could take our comments and tell the BOR or President (not that we've had one in the last 40 years that understood athletics) to make changes and move the department forward.

Glad to see you better EDT. I share much of your sentiment. With Covid my biggest and selfish, concern was whether I’d get to watch the Horns in person or at all in 2020. Now my biggest concern is if I’ll even care. Been a difficult circumstance to wrap my head around.

@EDT I hope you are doing well. In crazy times like this I find it helpful to focus on what I am grateful for (family, health, work) and those things that I can directly influence. All the other stuff is outside of my control so I will not stress or worry about it and just trust that things will work out somehow. They usually do.

This is good to hear. I had feared that the administration would only hear from the vocal minority and would react accordingly. They may still 'f' this up, but if they do, at least I'll know they were aware of my opinion on the matter.

It all boils down to how many contacted the school like I did, and how many BMD demand we keep our traditions intact, etc....

EDT - pleased you survived that terrible ordeal and are doing better now. I share a lot of your thoughts and concerns about the program.

Majestic - I'm far from a BMD but I did email CDC my thoughts about the situation and keeping our traditions. Hopefully others here on HF have also. I think the Eagles thread had the email link if anyone wants it, if not there are other ways you can perform a online search to get it.

EDT, the sentiments of Dionysus go double for me. It is hard to accept negative situations like this about our Horns, but perhaps your situation proves that we need to keep it all in it’s proper perspective. A 20 year old kid cannot damage my love, support and spirit for my Horns. A bunch of egghead administrators choosing to support a 20 year old’s bad behavior over the loyal fans like EDT CAN kill my support.

Take care and the best to you.

I had this weird dream last night that I was lost in a jungle. (Cutting out some details) I stumbled upon a utopian society where apes and humans got along fabulously. Yes the apes could talk and they all wore overalls and stood very upright. One of them showed me around. There was absolutely no discard or strife. It was a well organized peaceful society. Then I woke up and was pondering the dream. Got some coffee sat down and then my mind shifted over to Mark Wahlberg I guess because I read something about him yesterday and also he was in a movie planet of the apes. And then I remembered, from what read, that he had a violent racist past. And I thought, well he started out bad, does he have to be vilified all his life. Then I thought about UT and hornfans. Does UT have to be vilified all it's existence because of shaky beginnings (if there was Confederate influence). No. If a man was a violent criminal, but repents, becomes a loving Christian is he going to be vilified the rest of his life? No. Equality and fairness for every race has grown by leaps and bounds the last 60 years. History should not taint a person or an institution all of it's life if positive changes have already been made. Maybe a few more changes is in order but not giving money to BLM. I'm against that. BTW, I actually did dream that last night.

Like Ted Bundy? I know, an extreme example. But that general sentiment re:forgiveness normally boils down to if the victim was a friend/family or a stranger. If the victim was your child? Probably wouldn’t forgive. If the victim was some random guy halfway across the world? Probably would. People don’t care about most things until it directly affects them. Getting back to the topic, it’s fair to say black people are more affected by names/statues, etc. of individuals that advocated slavery/segregation/racism. So it’s not exactly apples to apples.

A friend offered me tickets to that game but it was so friggin' cold I passed... boy was I gratified I didn't go.
I sat in the upper deck with wife and young son. I refused to leave, even with gnashing of the teeth by wife and son. We were flying solo up there. No other warm bodies around us to break the wind. She never misses an opportunity to tell people about the day I made her freeze. I have never bolted early on them.

I think that I remember Nobis being asked what would have happen if his team had been in the tunnel when Miami started their crap. He was to have said something like “The game would have started in the tunnel and we would have won”.

Same boat. I am torn between wanting Texas to win and Herman to lose and be gone... which will result in indifference. If we win, great, Texas won. If we lose, I will not shed a tear for Herman or the team. This is coming from someone who has attended a hell of a lot of UT football games since I was a small kid and have been a lifelong diehard fan.

I generally have no opinion on coaches as people. The only Texas coach I did not care for as a person was Mackovick, but I could live with him when he won. Herman is the first coach I flat want gone for off the field reasons.

Individually, if Texas keeps the Eyes of Texas, I am probably indifferent and not attending any games until Herman and this current group of players are gone.

If Texas removes the Eyes of Texas, I am becoming a season ticket holder for UTSA (I live in San Antonio) and will be permanently indifferent to UT Football (assuming it never brings the Eyes back or never changes for the better).

For years, the only Texas game with a great, classic environment has been the OU game.

I think the issue is this is more this is "the straw the broke the camel's back". The UT athletic department has been treating its fans like poop since Patterson. It's gotten progressively worse and worse the past 5 years. On the university side of things, I have seen a university get more and more corrupt and care less and less about the students. The game experience has gone downhill in general.... so much so that no Eyes of Texas would completely kill it. If i want a generic environment, UTSA tickets are cheaper, it's easier to get to games, there are limited commercials and the games generally only last 3 hours.

There are alternatives if UT keeps selling a worse and worse product and keeps killing any pride taken in the University of team.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I was at the Med Center today. My test came back showing that I still have multiple blood clots in my legs and lungs, so most likley will not go away until late Sept. Anyway I found out my cariiologist is a big time aggy and he is really pissed that students there are painting blood on the statue of the guy who started aggy. They also want to take it down, if it is taken down then hundreds of millions of $ will not be given to the school by the big donors. I asked him if UT business owners paid aggy that much $.

EDT - sorry to hear about your health. Hang in there and stay strong.

I've had my moments of sadness during these depressing times, but I keep punching away for my family. I've mentally prepared myself to move on without my Longhorns if I have to......but certainly hope it doesn't come to that.

Anyway, keep up that Texas fight :hookem:

EDT- Reading your health battles helps me put all the other noise into perspective. It's just that noise. As Dion said- this is a great time to refocus on family, etc. Whether we can sing it or not EDT- the Eyes of Texas are Upon You! Get well!!!

In all the noise- I stumbled across the video tonight. You all may have seen it before. Did a little research and found out this guy used to be an Aggie professor and chaplain for the team during Slocum years. So that part sucks but the message is good and inspiring. Don't try to take his words and project on Eagles and others- I suggest just having an open mind and see if there is a nugget or two you could apply to your own life. Rick Rigsby: Lost My Wife

I do care very much about our team, the 2020 season, and UT athletics in the future. I want to see UT football at the TOP again. ASAP

I don't think anyone needs to "grow a pair" as above stated. Without great athletes this team will not be better or successful in the future. Trying to get your way, or dismiss a group of folks, let them "leave" because you don't understand their concerns doesn't sound like a winning strategy to me. It sounds like the same thing that has offended people in the first place. And led to polarization, anger and a lack of inclusiveness.

I don't think contributing to an adversarial, or contentious relationship with athletes, the black athlete in this instance, will advance anyone's cause, or the cause of UT's future.

The days of showing power to overwhelm a group of folks who you disagree with or don't understand seems to be a strategy from a past that we really don't need to revisit.

Sitting down, communicating, reaching understanding and working toward a more positive, inclusive and collaborative future seems the path to me.

That doesn't mean giving up our traditions, or The Eyes just because someone makes a statement.

But just about anything is OK for discussion. Start the discussion. Let all the affected parties into the room. Don't be afraid of change, if change is necessary and right. We can handle it.

This University is big enough to hear all ideas. To consider innovative, creative solutions; especially to centuries old problems that need to be addressed. To lead in the arena of problem solving. This is how we will insure a strong institution, and a successful athletic program.

WOW! Thank you so much for sharing this video. My Dr. Ordered a Petscan for me on 9/24/2020. It is a pretty scary test on so many levels because I have had cancer five times and I thought they were just looking for the clot issues. I am believing that everything will work out just fine. FYI been cancer free for 10 years. God Bless you.
