Do I want a Gmail account?

I've used yahoo for years but have been getting a lot of spam lately. I heard a lot about gmail. Is it really that much better? What makes it so great?

I got one a while back to have a login for Google Talk. I never actually used it for email but see hundreds of spam email when I check it once a month or so. Granted, 99% of it is in the Spam folder (equivalent of Yahoo's Bulk folder).

Either way, I'd recommend getting a Google account if you shop at sites which have the Google Checkout option. They often have discount incentives just for using it.

It integrates really nicely on the iPhone.

I use yahoo primarily but use gmail with Picasa to email pictures. Only had it a few weeks though. im sure there will be other useful things i can use with it.

i like gmail. figuring out some of my "conversations" - who sent what and when - only adds to the experience.

It is definitely worth trying. I've been using it for over a year and won't go back to yahoo.

Actually, I continue to use my yahoo account for all online transactions and purchases, but I use gmail for personal mail. The segregation has been nice too.

I have a few GMail accounts, and it's great, but one caveat: my main account is [email protected], and this has caused two problems:

* Because I have annoyingly common first and last names, I get a lot of spam from companies just guessing that there's probably an email address with those two names. I also forwarded my alumni.utexas.net address to this account, so I get a ton of spam from that, too. The good news is that the GMail spam filter catches almost all of it, so I only get 1 spam in my inbox a week, if that. The only false positives I find in the Junk box are the @Texas newsletter, which I really don't want to read anyway.

* There's at least 5-10 people who think [email protected] (without the . between the names) is *their* email address, and Gmail forwards email sent to that address to me. I have in just the past few months gotten personal emails, a Dell support chat log, resumes for someone wanting to work at an aquarium in Georgia, entry confirmation for the Little Miss Mississippi pageant, and receipts for some firewall/online backup service in the UK, which I kept canceling, and the guy kept re-paying for, until I changed all the account information to offensive words.
