Do I have a bad dentist?

Warning-- this one's long and I'm pissed and bitching.

OK-- I've had some issues with this dentist's office, mainly with the woman that runs the front desk. I'll complain about that later... for the moment, I'm curious what happens to other people when they go to the dentist. What does your dentist/ hygienist do for your cleaning?

All the did for me was scrap the front, back and in-between areas of my teeth with a hook thing that vibrates. (looks like the normal one only it vibrates and shoots water.) Then they polished the teeth.

That's it-- two steps. I've always had them clean the biting/chewing surfaces of my teeth as well as the sides... but it didn't happen here. No fluoride rinse, no flossing...

So, I feel like the dentist isn't doing as thorough of a job as should be done. If you don't feel like reading about the office management issues, you can quit reading and tell me if you think this doctor was cutting corners and not thorough.

Now on to the office management issue.

We first went in last fall. It took another two months after the initial exam to get in for the cleaning. LHF68 and I scheduled them on the same day. Meanwhile, we never get any bill or anything in the mail stating a breakdown of what we paid vs what insurance paid or anything, like I expected since the doctor's office didn't provide it at the time of the visit.

A couple of days before the next visit, the receptionist lady calls me up w/ a reminder call: 2:30, which jives with what 68 has entered on the calendar after the first appointment. LHF68 and I get to the office at about 2:15, and they seem shocked to see us. They tell us our appointments were at 2:00 and 2:45. Well, we accept the mis-communication, although we're frustrated, and they tell us they only have time to see one of us-- the other has to reschedule. So, LHF68 gets his cleaning. After he's done, we're checking out, and find out we're being charged 100 bucks. Charges include a 50 fee for the cleaning because it's a "deep" cleaning, 35 bucks to have a chipped spot filed on 68's tooth, and 15 bucks as a "sterilization fee." We nut up and pay it, even though we're surprised. I reschedule my appointment to get my teeth cleaned and a cavity filled another month down the road. Also, during this whole process with the misunderstanding and unexpected fees, the receptionist/secretary lady is a really condescending *****. Once again, we get no bill at the time, and have not gotten one in the mail.

So... I got back today to get my cleaning and filling. I get there extra early just in case. I got back for the cleaning, everyone's all chipper, etc. I'm a little surprised at the cleaning because they didn't do some of the things I'm used to, but I think they're going to finish up after they do the filling. Next thing I know the hygienist is taking off my bib and telling me I'm ready to go. I ask about the filling. The receptionist lady proceeds to tell me - being a ***** yet again- that I asked that only the cleaning be rescheduled last time I was in, and not the cavity fill. I point out to her that I did not ask for that, I had just ask that the appointment be rescheduled. She continues to insist that I specifically ask for only a cleaning. I point out to her that this doesn't make sense, and remind her of the conversation we had on the previous visit about how hard it is for me to take off work. She continues to insist she only did what I asked her to do. I finally get pissed at this lady for being so rude, and just pay. She charges me 90 bucks-- I'm going--" whoa-- my husband called yesterday to get a breakdown of the charges and you said it would be 65" She says, yes, but there's a 25 dollar fee because I had missed the last appointment. I really pissed, and just schedule the appointment and leave.

So now I'm looking at taking off work 4 days for this. I think I'm going to file a complaint with the insurance company.

If you made it this far, thanks for caring.

Definitely a half-*** cleaning. BAD office management.

I'd switch dentists ASAP and let him/her know why through direct communication.

It's amazing how one ***** in a dentist office can gum up things (lame *** pun). I used to have every other Friday off from work so I got all my dental work done on those days. All of a sudden they started closing on Fridays because they said people just weren't interested in going to the dentist on Fridays and it wasn't worth staying open....I was bummed. Fast forward. It turns out the lady who made the appointments was steering everyone away from Fridays which they realized AFTER she left them.

Let me guess...Castle Dental or another "chain"?

I agree with the previous post. Don't ever ever go back.

Definitely find another dentist. No excuse for all those screw-ups, vague charges, etc. I'm in a similar situation. After seeing the same dentist in Austin for about 25 years he was finally forced to retire for health reasons and sold his practice. He was known in Austin as "the dentists' dentist." I knew he was good, but now I realize just how spoiled I was. Now that I'm seeing the new dentist, cleanings aren't as thorough (his wife is the hygienist), insurance claims don't seem to be getting done, I'm being told I need dental work done that's been fine for many years, etc. No discussion, just schedule the work. So, if anyone has any recommendations, I'm looking for a new dentist in Austin, too.

I will not get into the specifics of the work. However, I will tell you that the office's communication is horrible. They need to explain what they are doing and why. This includes the treatment plan, the treatment, and the billing. I would definitely seek a new dentist if for no other reason than being dissatisfied with the current dentist.

A cavitron is a dental tool that uses high frequency sound waves to clean teeth instead of the traditional method of scaling your teeth with bulky metal hand scalers.

It's an independent dental practice, not a castle dental center type place. I had insurance one time a few years back that only let you go to Castle. They told me I needed 5K worth of work done, some of which I knew was ********. When they offered me a credit card on the way out, I knew it was a scam.

And, just to clarify, I'm not just an anti-dentite. I really don't trust most doctors. I like my ObGYN, but haven't seen other doctor I liked since I was a kid-- so I don't usually go. I guess I'm an anti-doctite.

There's no excuse for rude customer service, so for that reason alone, switch dentists, and when they send you a reminder for your next visit, tell them why you switched, or write them a letter now.
If they feel the cleaning was adequate due to some new technology or something, they did not communicate that properly, so either the cleaning was subpar or the "bedside manner" was lacking.
However, you will be lucky to find anything better, as this is a field that has progressed little or none since the techniques were developed during the Spanish Inquisition. You are lucky they didn't pull out a couple of your fingernails just for fun while you were in the rack, er, chair.

I usually end up punching the hygienist after she starts scraping and then I run from the office crying like a baby.
