DLP TVS

Anyone have or have seen the Samsung HLP 5063 (50") or the 61"? I am looking at those as possible replacements for my old RCA 50" projection TV that is really on its last legs.... any other DLPs that are worth looking at too.

Taking a look at the DLP you really need to look at it with and every day signal, something that is not in HD. The problem with the Samsung is that it does not have a very good mode for taking 4x3 info and filling the screen with it. The second issue is that with lots of motion it does not do as well as the LCD by Sony. The colors of the DLP can be better but they often suffer from a green hue or what some would call a green push. The LCD by Sony is a very good set as well but it does not run as bright as the DLP. One other set to take a look at is the new JVC unit, HD-ILA, it is a form of LCOS, liquid crystal on silicon. This unit has some of the best color, very bright almost to bright, and does very well with motion. If you look to go any larger then 50 to something like a 60inch the only thing I would look at would be the Sony XBR, it is an LCD but nothing comes close to it. In this unit they use a different bulb and different scaler for analog material. IMO the only thing that does better then this unit would be going to a plasma display.

Million and one threads on this set on the avsforum.

I am in the market as well- only advice is that most of the hd sets- be it dlp, lcd or even the plasmas are very picky on the signal you are feeding it. Especially the samsungs. They do great w/ a clean HD or dvd signal, but tend to really show the flaws in a bad cable signal or over-compressed satellite feed.

Best thing to do is to hit all the local stores- as you get varying qualities of source material-- and find a setup similar to what you will have.

I read an entire thread on that forum about the new Mitsubishi DLPs. From the reviews, the picture is good to great with normal signal. It's outstanding in HD. No problems with fast moving pictures like sports or video games. No green push. And it has a lot of cool options.

I want to go look at the 62" 525. Some people on AVS are getting some good deals from Best Buy on them. 10% off TV and stand, BB Bucks, and a free XBOX. I wonder if I can get a Best Buy in Texas to do that.

"HLP 5063 (50") "

I have this one it is great.

The "green push" can be fixed, although it will take up to 30 seconds of your time to do so.

I have zero complaints so far with my Samsung DLP.

When you look at the three major types of HD large screens: plasma, dlp, and LCD and I did for weeks) it was easy to eliminate the plasma as it's only advantage is width for 2x the price.

The LCD vs DLP was a bit harder, the pictures were similar but I concluded after much observation that the DLP had the better colors. YMMV.

When you added in the bonus of the DLP screen never going bad with cheap lamp replacement i got he DLP. I have not observed any of the antifanboy problems associated with the DLP (rainbowing, green tint etc) but I suppose they can exist, I'm temtped to think they have been fixed since I never observed them.

I think you will be happy with the sony LCD or the Samsung DLP, get whichever is cheaper at the time.

I bought a Samsung HLP5663A (56") through the avsforum.com powerbuy and have had it almost a month now. It is a fabulous TV, and I have no regrets. I watched the PGA Championship this weekend, and the HD shots were phenomenal. The biggest issue that seems to plague these TVs concerns audio-video synch (video can lag behind), but it depends on the feed. For me, this is only noticeable on a few older videos they show on VH1 Classics.

Grinder- what are you feeding it with- cable or dish?

How's the 4:3 standard definition look (I still haven't found one of these in a store that had a direect sd satellite feed (not split a bunch of times)- just HD/ dvd feeds going).

the 4:3 stuff never looks great on (any) big screen HD tvs, I actually don't really notice it much anymore, I have the TV stretch it.

I was at tweeter in houston and Home theatre store looking at these. Both salesmen pushed the Samsung DLP hard. Mitsubushi is in geneation 1 while Samsung is in their 4th.

Actually Mits is on their 2nd generation. And it already has the HD2+ chip. If I could buy a tv right now, it'd be that one.

Yes HD2+ is out and it does sound great on paper, but IMO it still has even more issues with motion. I have seen the Mits ,the Tosh. and the HLP5085 and all suffer greatly IMO from a green push. The Mits with the screen on the front can give some issues with a room with a lot of windows and for most people that like to fill the screen with 4x3 material, the mits is by far the worst at doing it. You guys really need to look at the JVC HD-ILA it really looks the best of the bunch.

Thanks for all the feed-back----I will probably be looking at one seriously after 1/1/05. Any problems buying one off the "authorized" internet sites? They seem pretty reasonable.
