DIY Home Addition, anyone done it?

Here's my situation I am considering expanding my kitchen area off the back of the house to add about 250 or so square feet.

Pouring a new slab ( I would break out part of the existing patio as I don't think it has rebar in it to help support the additional weight of the expansion. I was thinking of doing the slab, then prefabbing the framing and then going to work over a long weekend basically doing quick demolition of the area in question (mostly windows) and completing basic frame up.

My concerns are really in changing the roofline. As I would need to do to accomdate the additional space. I figured this might be an area that could get a little tricky, but then I also think hell it's just tearing off shingles, going apeshit with a reciprocating saw and building out a new frame.

I did some framing one summer so it's not too intimidating but clearly want to get it right on the roof line.

After the addition I will pertty much gut the existing kitchen and go to town rocking out a new ceiling a with new lighting and pretty much a complete redo..

Anyhow just wondering if anyone here has taken on a DIY project of similar size, for pros and cons.

Yep the expansion will extend 10-15 feet out from the bottom edge of the roof line. I was thinking sort of making a large gable but it's going to cause me to need to do a little underground drainage.

Unless I do a hipped roof, but that's not consistant with the rest of the design.

Sounds as though you'll be cutting a "California" there. SeeThe Link for help.

Waterproofing will be your biggest challenge. Other than that, you can handle it.
