Three weeks ago this Saturday my dog and I graduated from training and officially joined the Divine Canine pack, a non-profit organization that trains and dispatches therapy dog teams throughout Austin. Our motto is "Heel to Heal".

As a therapy dog team we visit a retirement home (including the Alzheimer's ward) every Saturday morning, the Austin State Hospital every other Sunday afternoon and next week we will be making our first visit to Ft. Hood. They ask that once training is over you commit to two one hour visits a month but we're having such a great time, we're going to do more.

Unfortunately their website hasn't been updated in a couple of years but feel free to check it out, you can find information there on how your dog can also become a Divine Canine.

The schedule on the web site is incomplete, there are many more site visits then what they have listed there. A website update is underway and hopefully will be completed soon.

Divine Canines provides all necessary training to volunteer, all you need is a well behaved pooch and a desire to help others.

by "well behaved", what do you mean? I'd love to do this w/ our dogs, (I think the older one might be too big or too old,) but or Golden is only 1. She's the dumbest dog ever though, but exceptionally sweet.

If you can get your dog through the AKC Good Citizen Test , you can get through the therapy dog training.

Thankfully they do expect dogs to be dogs so mistakes are ok. They're more interested in a quick recovery then perfect behavior all the time.

yeah... My dog can do most of that stuff, except the distractions part. A loud noise gets made and she's going to run straight under something and hide...which is usually under one of us, I have no idea how to train her not to do that.

I don't remember what season it was but Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperererer dealt with exactly that. It was a Shepherd or other big dog that was skiddish to noises.

I tip my hat to you for doing this.
When my stepfather was in a nursing home, people would bring dogs in, and they had a resident cat. Animal therapy, I believe it is called. I'm sure most of us have read studies of how this provides beneficial results for the patients in these places, so kudos to led224 and Emma.

What a pretty dog! I think this is wonderful -- a great way to reach out and share with others!

Thats wonderful.

After youy posted this last week. I checked to see if my dog would qualify. not -- even -- close...
