District 9

I think the critics that gave it four stars were probably just paying attention to the movie. All of the questions asked in the post two above mine where either addressed directly in the movie or require just a little critical thinking to understand.

The fluid is collected from discarded prawn technology- they were basically harvesting duracells from toys to recharge a car battery.

As for their social structure, the movie makes it pretty clear that most of the aliens are not that bright.

I thought it was a good movie. It made sense to me, though I did get sick of the bad guys having someone in their gunsights only to not be able to get the shot fired off, which was played out several times. There are some things that are unexplained that kept it from being a "Great" movie in my estimation, but it kept my interest and I enjoyed the time it took to develop the characters. There were some things that wore me out, but it was pretty good nonetheless.

I hated Armageddon, All the Pirates of the Caribbean, the new Indian Jones and the new Batman movie. I also hated Eagle Eye, Independence Day and I know better than to see the 2nd Transformers movie. I also hated The Departed.

Why did I hate these movies? There is this trend in big budget Hollywood type movies where there has to be a plot twist, followed by another plat twist, and then like 6 more plot twists, then when the story has gotten so mired into muck it finally ends and we are all supposed to just love the fact that we just got taken for a wild ride.

I love movies that tell a good story that has one good plot line and a good twist to it. The Crying Game comes to mind... it was just a well done movie that didn't have a bunch of unbelievable ******** in it. Yes District 9 does have some of that in it, but they at least attempt to explain why things are the way they are. Stuff like the Aliens liking cat food and humans being able to understand their language doesn't need to be spelled out, or at least to me. It is just the way it is.

I don't really like movies that have only a cool CG or some hot chick or a bunch of crazy plot twists.

thanks for the responses. i particularly enjoyed the cat food/whataburger reference.

as to the fuel, again, why stop on earth when the fuel was already on the plane in the weapons? if there was a lab on board to reverse the human to prawn transformation, then can i safely assume there was also a laboratory on board to make fuel, or was that technology only on earth in a junkyard?

atx, care to take a crack at why he knocked out the alien leader when he got back to the plane? the whole point of the movie was to get the plane back to the mothership at that point.

about the language issue, fair enough, that's not a major point, but when you're dealing with a worthless population that is that stupid, i actually do think it's far fetched to assume that they can learn english in 20 years, much less 200 years.

Are they stupid though? They mastered space travel to a far far greater deal then we have. They produce weapons that absolutely kick ***. They're refugees, hungry, poor, and are unfamiliar to our customs.

District 10 : The Return of Christoper Johnson. to be released in 3 years

That's just how I felt walking out. I went in expecting one thing and left after seeing something completely different then what the previews showed (not that the previews told you anything at all after seeing it)

I've now seen several threads like this on various message boards. And they all go the same; some people love the movie (I thought it was very good), others hate it. It seems that those who dislike the movie do so for pretty much the same reasons - why did this happen? why did that happen?

And in pretty much every case, they're questions that can be or have been answered. Come on, people, use a little critical thinking, imagination and/or creativity, and I'm sure you can come up something at least remotely plausible. I feel sorry for those who can't.

Wikus also just freaked out at the shocking prospect of not being fixed right away. He was in shock and acted like he was. Later, the fact he is deep down a good guy and as the situation had time to set in he righted things best he could.
