District 9

it's been getting great reviews....and 89% on rotten tomatoes.

really....wow...wouldn't think that from the trailers. it looks like transformers.

i may check it out now

Thanks, I feel better now. I was going to see it and was hoping it was not gonna be lame. This gives hope, cool.

I didn't like it and there will probably be a district 10, won't see that one.
It wasn't what I was expecting. I thought there was going to be some alien vs. human whooop ***, no.... none of that. I mean I'm intrigued by the story that was presented because i want to know what happened to the alians but you walk out of there still not knowing, i suspect there is way more to it than what was shown and we won't find out until D10.

Personally I dont think it was set up for a sequel, but ended how it did on purpose. If you go into it thinking its a "non stop adrenaline filled thrill ride" youll be disappointed. But it was a great movie that I think most people will enjoy.

Idea of the movie looks like it came from this. The Link

I read the reviews and I think I was expecting too much. I was a little disappointed.

The best movie that I have seen in a while. I would actually love to see this as a video game, and I hope that there are sequels.

I was struck by the fact that I wanted all of the human characters to die.

it was a well made movie but...

spoilers

the main character was a buffoon. and i actually wanted him to die. why the **** did he knock out his alien friend at the hut when he was upset being cured was going to take 3 years? and then what was he going to do?! he knocked his friend out and tried to fly up to the mothership to accomplish what? from that moment on i was really annoyed with the movie. but it was well made and an interesting story.

Spoilers related to plot.....

The movie is making a political statement about apartheid. The 3 years may be significant because the first democratically elected government took about 3 years to really start working. There are other possibilities on why 3 years is significant too.

It is a deep movie with things below the surface that most aren’t watching out for in a sci-fi movie. The aliens are pacifists who reject materialism (this is a big theme in British/African relations). If you went in expecting “Transformers”, you would be walking out soon. I also didn’t care for the French/documentary shooting style. I like a little, but the whole movie was handheld.

When you are rapidly morphing into a Prawn, logic and ciear decision-making ain't high on your list.

It wasn't what I was expecting & was a major disappoinment. Based on the reviews, I thought it was a can't miss. Then after about the first hour, all I could think about was "when will this end" & "should I just leave."

And I don't think there's any doubt they plan to have a sequel, probably "District 10".

This movie was awesome. Thanks for this thread to convince me to go see it as I was on the fence. Saw it tonight and I am glad I did.

I was underwhelmed.

I just wasn't in the target audience for this flick.

If you liked "Cloverfield" or "The Blair Witch Project," I think you could be.

Too much hand held camera work and my inability to understand the South African accents never let me get comfortable enough to even make a good attempt at giving this flick a chance.

I came close to walking out.

Others may really like it, but I found its vision and its vibe too vague or too visionary, if you must, for me.

The same story elements and plot, if told in a more traditional or old fashioned way would still have seemed lacking and recycled to me.

That's probably good reason to have made this movie the way they did, for probably younger viewers than I to enjoy.

I saw the movie Friday and thought it was one of the best of the year. If there is a sequel, I'll go see that one immediately.

interesting to see all of the reviews on here. i just saw this movie, and if it's not the worst movie i've ever seen, it's definitely in the top 3. a couple of questions/comments below, and warning there are spoilers:

as noted above, him knocking out the leader when they first get back to the ship was absolutely ridiculous. there's no logical explanation for it, and that alone makes the movie a joke.

the father in law character was an absurd charicature.

how did humans learn to speak alien again?

what is the magical fluid that the aliens turned into fuel? did it fall out of the space ship? if it was on the ship, why stop on earth in the first place? And not only is it fuel, it also turns humans into aliens!!

Were aliens allowed outside of the district? If not, how did the guy deliver the flower to his wife? if so, why did they stay in there?

was no one else disturbed that there's one alien that's a brilliant leader, and every other alien in the colony is a total moron? if all they do is sit around and eat garbage all day, shouldn't the leader consider himself lucky to leave them on earth and get back home to the other geniuses on his home planet.

why did the aliens have names and addresses?

how did they acquire money to buy stuff?

cat food?

when wikus steps into the 2 legged machine towards the end and runs away, where was he running to?

the sad thing is i could go on and on. to each his own with respect to liking movies, but i'll admit it's staggering to me that some critics have given this movie 4 stars. they should be summarily fired for that.

ill take a crack at this.

humans had 20 years to learn their language, i dont see it being that far fetched they could speak it.

i think at the start they said the aliens came down in the command module and it mustve been an attempt to locate the fluid. they ran out realized we didnt have any and spent 20 years trying to collect some. I was kinda waiting for them to say that the aliens being scavengers was simply a way of finding the materials needed to produce the fluid. maybe its dark matter or something humans dont know of. as for it turning humans into prawns....most rocket fuels are dangerous stuff and it could have been radioactive or something.

aliens could sneak in and out of D9 as shown when wikus sneaked in, but not in large numbers.

if you think of the colony as being a naval boat, maybe they lost all sense of order by a disruption in the chain of command caused by the 'famine' they went through when they were hovering. chris johnson was simply the guy who dealt with the power systems (and he had another prawn who helped him).

humans tried to assimilate the prawns into their culture and later rejected them, the prawns kept the names.

they sold weapons and technology

cat food = prawn whataburger

i forget, i think the ship that got shot down.
