Disposing of old batteries

I have an old lead acid cell phone battery from a phone that I no longer own. What's the proper method for pitching them? And I don't live near a recycling place.

I just chunk all my old ones into Barton Creek.

the guy at my local Batteries Plus says they will send them to a recycling center...

Rad Shack takes them. Doesn't everyone in the continental US live within five miles of at least two Rad Shacks?
