Disposing of cooking oil

I tend to shy away from frying because I never know what to do with all that oil when I'm done with it. How do you a) save oil for using again and b) dispose of it when you aren't going to use it anymore?

you can reuse it by filtering it with a cheese cloth and a funnel back into its container.

i think you can dispose of it in your backyard. at least thats what alton did on his fried turkey episode. and that was a crapload of oil.

I don't know much about saving it. But as for disposing, are you using a Crisco-type saturated fat or an unsaturated fat like vegetable oil? If it's Crisco, dump it in the trash. For the vegetable oil-type fats, I usually dump them down the kitchen drain with hot water running and the disposal on. You don't want to dump Crisco down the drain as it'll harden when it cools and clog your disposal.

Well, that too.

You don't want to dump liquid oil down your sink even if you do run hot water for an hour. It will still combine with other wastes to clog your drain.

I pour it out by the back alley. It is made from vegetables or peanuts rather than being a petroleum based product.

If you can't pour it outside, dump it via a funnel into a large plastic container after it cools. We use liquid laundry detergent bottles or the original oil container. Also, make sure you don't dump the left over water from a shrimp or crawfish boil into your yard. The high salt content will kill the grass. I know from experience, if you know what I mean.

We used to save the oil in an empty coffee can and then store it in the freezer. When the can was full we'd put it in the trash can. This was for all cooking oil regardless of what kind it was.

This is no longer a practice at my house because I eat out 100% of the time.
