Dirty's

Martin's Come Back. Last of the old timey eateries. Last time I was there, a Lone Star sign on the wall said "Long Necks, Long Legs, Long Nights."

As I have mentioned before, my parents met there on a double date in the Spring of 1940; they were not paired on that date, but were on the next. As a result of this, I owe a lot to Dirty's, but I have not eaten there very often.

Pretty sure they will draw a variety of opinions.

Love the place. Eaten there twice in the last ten days, and introduced the place to a new co-worker and they loved it as well.

Last month I took 22 Boy Scouts there on a Saturday, man they had a blast with the old Pac-Man arcade game in the back.

Got to be one of the best places in Austin for onion rings.

Guess I need to go back and check it out. I ate there a few years after I got out of school and I wondered why I thought it was so good. OT, tots and a lemonade was a classic meal though.

dirty's is a great place. i can remember times i would get take out burgers to take home to watch games on the tube and having to bring a chronicle to put under the bag in the car on the way home because the grease would soak through the wrapper and the bag and onto the car seat on the way home.

although i think it has declined recently. this started when the health department made them start cleaning the grills and using preformed patties instead of ones made by the cook by grabbing a hunk of meat from a box and chunking it onto the grill

i'll usually choose frans or top notch but i will go out of my way for a dirty's because i've had so many great burgers there over a lot of years

my dad went to dirtys when he was at UT, and i have been going there since i can remember with him. he would always tell me about this one woman who worked there back in the day and who was still there when we went together.

i havent seen her in a while though

it may just be my love of the place and anything "austin" but it is my favorite burger joint of all time

I used to be a delivery driver and then a pharmacy tech at Hyde Park Pharmacy at 40th/41st and Guadalupe. I would pick up lunch at Dirty's occasionally.

So, here's my grease story. I can certainly attest to the grease soaking through the bag. We ordered three OT's with fries/rings. I picked up the burgers and brought them back to the pharmacy. Couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes.

I walked into the store and went around the back counter and the burgers fell out of the bottom of the bag. Some of the fries had carpet fuzz on them but the burgers were wrapped and still good to eat.

But that's saying something when burgers wrapped in paper soak through the paper and also soak through the brown bag causing the bag to break open due to the amount of grease.

Never cared for Dirty's that much. I used to eat lunch at Hilsberg's (sp?) Cafe on 21st St. - Lunch special was CFS, mashed taters & gravy, and a small salad .....for .85 cents. Used to see DKR & the other coaches in there a lot.

Dirty's is the last place my dad and I had lunch together. Sat on a picnic table outside. It was special before that, but will always be now.

GakFoo nailed it. The health department put the clamps down and the quality of the burgers declined.

On the subject of onion rings, also have to include Dan's in there.

I've had many good times at Dirty's. I used to walk there from campus many times.

First place I took my parents too when I was a student and first place my mom ate at before her first Texas football game.

Cheese burger, fries and a chocolate milkshake....goodness.

Instead of being an old fart and saying it's not as good as it used to be I'll just say that it has changed. The burgers are smaller and more expensive and it's not the dive it once was. On the other hand, they replaced the old lady waitresses who never carded us back in the day with some hot coeds. Oh, they also put in some nice TVs.
