DirecTV question

I've got a receiver in my living room with HD and DVR on it. I also get charged each month to rent a BASIC receiver for my bedroom. My father gave me a fairly new HD receiver (withouth DVR) for my bedroom.

Question is--can i plug the receiver my father gave me to the wiring, get channels like I would with the rented receiver, return the rented one, and not have to pay the $6 or 7/monthly charge? I don't know if the access card in the old receiver is still valid, since my parents cancelled their DirecTV subscription about 8 months ago.

No, you have to pay the fee for each 'additional' receiver (I think they give you one per month for free); it doesn't matter whether it's owned or leased. Also you might check and make sure his isn't a leased one also; I don't think D*TV has been selling (as opposed to lease only) new receivers for a couple of years now...

Definitely don't get rid of the access card, even if it's not valid; they can reactivate it for you, and for them to send you a new one they'll charge you $20...

Only if you have just one receiver... otherwise the answer is no... You still have to activate the receiver that you got from your parents, thus having to pay the monthly fee... Also, make sure you don't have a contract that requires you to have the receiver from Directv as opposed to a "bought" one...
