DirecTV DVR?

I’m a longtime DirecTV customer that’s never had a DVR/TiVo of any kind.

I really dislike the menus on the standard DirecTV receiver. I MUCH prefer the menus on the old Hughes receiver and have bought a few on eBay over the years to keep it that way.

With that, does anyone know if the menus on the DirecTV DVR receivers are the same as the standard receivers?

Are there other vendors who sell a receiver DVR that I can buy or is it just DirecTV?

I am not interested in a monthly charge like Tivo.

Thanks all.

same menus, but they have modified them slightly recently.

you can use 3rd party dvrs, but i think satellite signals present some complications.

personally, DVR >>>>>>> ****** menus

I already pay $5 a month per receiver except for my primary receiver.

Is it an additional $5 for the DVR service on top of the $5 for the additional receiver?

I have Direct TV and upgraded to a DVR in the living room. My bedroom TV still has the old Hughes receiver. To answer your question, the menu on the DVR is very different from the other one. However, the only difference that I've really noticed or care about is that on the DVR menu, you can't put a checkmark next to a show to tell it to tune to that channel when the show comes on. That's not really a big deal to me though. I like the menu otherwise.

I also have a DTV HDDVR and love it. I've never had TIVO (don't even know if TIVO works w/ satalite) so I don't know how it compares but (for me) it has plenty of recording time and is easy to use.

It is 2008, trust us once you start using a DVR the way it is intended to be used, you will never go back to watching TV without it.
