Direct TV vs Time warner cable

I've had TWC all my life and I think I may now have a chance to change to directv. Advantages to both? Also, does directv have a reliable internet provider?

You find a lot of info is you search on horn depot for this info. I have Directv and I'm happy with it. I also kept Time Warner for my high speed internet.

You should keep your Road Runner for internet, satellite ISP is only good for people (rural, etc) who have no alternative...

Roadrunner is fantastic.

As for the television aspect, Directv has probably 10x the number of HD channels that TWC does (at least in Dallas). And for less money too. Also, unlike TWC, Directv is not the devil.

I would have to say hands down on Direct TV.
1. NFL ticket
2. Currently 95 channels of HD content, not all true HD but looks much better then what TW puts out, and by August if everything goes as planned with the new sat. they are testing there should be 150 channels in HD.
3. It is a much better picture both HD and non-hd content. TW uses a very bad compression on there HD signal and when they push it through you are not getting the full 1080i or 720p that it should be. As they try and put more on their service it is going to keep killing other stations as they are limited on their bandwidth.
People will say when it rains that it goes out. With the new dish it performs much better during very bad weather and I mean raining cats and dogs. You will notice that sometime TW will go out do to this as well. If I ever do lose my sat. signal I have an antenna that I switch to to watch local HD which is even better then my DTV.
Hope this helps

Everyone says that satellite is cheaper than TW, but I haven't found that to be the case. Maybe I'm not doing enough research, but everytime I think about switching to satellite, it's significantly more expensive for a comparable package.

Hands down, Directv is better than any cable provider, especially when it comes to HD. I've had both Directv and Comcast for a couple of years. I have cable, internet, and phone through Comcast. I am paying just over $180 per month just for those three. So I am now switching to Directv only and AT&T phone and DSL. With what I have for my Directv channel line up, and with unlimited calling, and the top DSL from AT&T, I'll be saving about $20 a month. If you are going to get HD, Directv is the way to go.

ive done the research a few times and it's about a wash but then you throw in the $200 activation/set up fee with direct tv, it makes me too lazy to switch. i need to switch though b/c i hate time warner.

Thanks all.

Yeah, I think TWC gouges me, and the cable does go out. But, it's got to be worth my money to switch.

Am also considering the switch to DTV. Time Warner has surprisingly been good to me, but recently upped my bill by $20. Economics now a wash for the switch, and Sunday Ticket may push me over the edge.

Doesn't DTV typically offer a promotion for Sunday Ticket (e.g. 3-4 free months if you buy it)? Have seen it in the past, but not sure if they still do it...or if it just won't be on their site until NFL season gets closer. Anyone have experience with this promo?

We have TW - HD cable and roadrunner w/ 2 HD setboxes for $69 month. I try to find a reason to switch, but can't.

holden, how did you get that deal? TW keeps rising mine and wants to lock me in for 2 years

the dtv sunday ticket offer for new subscribers is usually closer to the season and is a good deal usually. I might do that again.

Call a million times. We saw the same deal for $59 at home and garden show and waited patiently for one of the reps to get close. When they offered, we jumped.

We switched to Direct TV this year after having TWC for what seemed like forever. No real complaints. The HD content is awesome. The only thing I really miss is being able to watch tv on my computer. I can't do that with satellite. Furthermore, the box we have doesn't allow for video transfer. I think we have the HR-21.

I had DTV for 8 years or so. Our old Tivo box that served as the satellite receiver as well finally kicked and we needed something that would work with high def as well. DTV wanted me to pay $399 to get 2 HD DVR receivers. When I told them I was thinking about switching they knocked it down to $299 and $60 off my bill ($10 * 6 months).

Since Dish and DTV offer basically the same price for new subscribers, and I was only out of pocket $99 for a second HD DVR, I switched.

So far, I think both services are about the same. The differences are:
KXAN (NBC) in Austin is in HD on Dish and not on DTV.
I share one of the DVR's for a third TV in my office so that is a bonus.
The channel packages are mostly the same with about 15 differences between each provider. I don't watch enough TV to care really since the majors are covered.
I do miss the ability to flip between two stations on the DVR that are both being recorded and I can swap without going to the DVR menu. I hear this is a Tivo patented feature that is only available with a Tivo box, which neither Dish nor DTV support.

When I called to cancel DTV they upped their offer to $50 for two HD DVR's and $120 ($10 * 12) off my bill. A better offer, and had they made that the first time I would not have switched. Now, I think I like Dish better.

With Dish Network, you may need a second dish to get the Austin locals. For some reason, they put them on the 62.5 satellite which the standard HD dish can't pickup because it needs to face in a different direction to pick up the other 3 HD satellites.

Call up Time Warner and have a competitors rates ready for comparison. If you are convincing enough they will transfer you to the retention department. After a little time on the phone I cut my bill by $40 a month. Other people have done the same thing.

Over the air is the gold standard. Far better than cable or satellite. But for people who want more than 5 channels, it is not a realistic solution.

my only complaint about it is that I can't record one thing and watch another, hard drive is bigger than TWC, quality of recording is about the same

thanks for telling me I was wrong, I think I figured out my issue and DirectTV is going to send me the part to fix it.

ttt. I just cancelled my time warner cuz the volume was messing up and they're overcharging me. I may re-up, but let me reread this thread.
