Had it for my first time in Chinatown on my last trip to NY, looking for a place in town. I know we've got a huge Asian population, so there's gotta be some great places, right?
My favorite is Fung's Kitchen off of 59 near Fondren or Gessner. Aside from great dim sum, there is the added bonus of having average to good service, a rarity in Chinese restaurants not named PF Chang's. It's a little pricier--which means the tab for 6 people might be $50-60 instead of $40-50.
I'll second Fung's. It's a good place for non-Asian people to go to because it's very clean, good english speaking service, and plenty of seating.
Ocean Palace. If that's the palce off Bellaire (inside the beltway) and in the same parking lot as an old old Dairy Queen (it's something else now) then yes, that place is the best I've been to. But it's very crowded.
Ocean Palace on on Bellaire outside the beltway in the same parking lot as Hong Kong Market. You can't miss it on the weekend, left hand side, parking lot is so full it's amazing.
My mistake. The location I was thinking of was Golden Palace. The food there is great.
I'm bad with Chinese restaurant names. I usually just meet my folks somewhere in Chinatown and find the place by their directions based off of shopping centers.
Within a mile of each other are, (from east to west):
Golden Palace, (just inside the beltway)
Kim Son, (fairly new), and the seemingly very popular
Ocean Palace.
The Genetic Mutation and I have been going to Ocean Palace at least once a month for several years. We love it when that big old room gets crowded.
We've been to the Kim Son a few times. It's also upstairs and is maybe a little fancier. Maybe just newer. Kim Son also has a huge hot pot buffet in another big room. We've done that a couple of times also but are still trying to get the hang of it.
Golden Palace is smaller, cheaper and probably the best but we usually do OP.
Good stuff. Be sure to go to the Hong Kong Market while you're out there. That's a whole 'nuther thread tho'.
