Digital SLR

Canon's coming out with a new 8 megapixel digital SLR camera, the D20. Appropos of that, does anyone have any advice on what to look for in a digital SLR, where to do research, that sort of thing? Also, can anybody shed any light on the Nikon vs. Canon feud?

Thanks

i can shed light onthe nikon-canon feud, and perhaps give a site or two for reference. www.photographyreview.com is a consumer run site where people are free to post reviews of photographic equipment. cnet probably also has reviews of digital cameras both by the staff and by consumers.

as to the nikon canon debate, once you buy an SLR, you are locked into that brand because of the different lensmounts that the various manufacturers employ. people of course become stupid fanboys and always claim that whatever they are shooting is vastly superior to the other in order to feed some sort of need to prove that they are smart for picking said brand of camera. nikon and canon both make good lenses, in general, it is thought that canon's lenses have more technological innovations like image stabilization etc., while nikon focuses on creating the best possible optics. i'm a nikon man, but only because i liked their entry level camera that they were selling 5 years ago. anyways good luck.

one thing to say about digital SLRs, and the reason i have yet to make the jump from film to digital SLrs is that for various reasons all digital SLRs for vaious reasons have a telescoping effect, meaning that if you are shooting a 50mm lens it will be transfomed into a 70 or 75mm lens. it will be difficult to shoot things like landscapes with a digital SLR because of this. just one little word of warning that you probably already knew.

All I can tell you is that I have been impressed by the photographs taken by this man using Canon digital cameras. The Link And his gallery software, available to the public, is very nice as well:The Link

just buy a nikon that's not digital and buy a shitlod of good lenses that are compatible with the igital format.

then wait three years to buy the digital camera body!

unless you are shooting a SHITLOAD of film or doing commercial work where you need to have immediate feedback you will be much better off.

the lenses are the key and the digital camera bodies are already falling in price.

Unless of course you are compelled to brag to your buddies about the new digital you got that will be worth less than half what you paid for it in 24-36 months....
