Digital camcorders

With the wife and I expecting our first child this summer and some Christmas money burning a hole in our pocket, we've figured what we need to get is a digital camcorder. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty clueless in these matters and rather than talk to the pimply-faced 16-year-old at Best Buy or some pretentious camera-ophile at a real camera shop, I figured I'd have better luck asking here. I'm wanting a digital camera that I can make and burn video DVDs on my computer. How much should I expect to spend, how much is too much, any particular features I should look for?
