Difference between Red Oak and Spanish Red Oak?

Can someone explain the difference? Our builder gave us 3 trees when we built and all 3 were supposed to be red oaks (they wouldn't give us Monterrey Oaks and we have a ton of Live Oaks native on our lot). 2 of them look alike, white bark... the 3rd has darker bark. This was around Thanksgiving. When they started sprouting leaves they all 3 looked alike in the leaves. Now though the one with the dark bark has much darker green leaves than the other 2. But the shapes are identical. Is this a different tree?

"Red Oak" is a non-specific category with several different tree varieties that fall into it. All three could be Red Oaks of two different varieties. One thing to consider is that both Live Oaks (again, there are several varieties) and Red Oaks are susceptible to oak wilt. If you had an outbreak on your property you could lose all of them. If you don't have any other tree varieties, you might want to consider adding some different trees as a form of property insurance. The question to ask yourself is what would my property look like if I lost all the live and red oaks?

These are probably the same tree. Emerging foliage tends to be lighter. Did the one with the darker leaves happen to leaf out before the other two? It is probably in a spot with a little higher soil temperature, maybe south of the other trees.

jelly, thanks for the reply. Our builder put all 3 of the red oaks in. Possibly what happened is they got the darker one from a different area/nursery. It was different from the day they planted it.

WIll this change? I honestly don't care if changes or not but just wondering if they were different trees.

You might need to feed the other 2 with an acidiron supplement. They will look pale yellow if they are chlorotic.
