Did we recruit Willie Warren?

guess all it takes is getting one win in the tourney to improve his lot and leave that hell-hole.

It's not good for the league to be seen as full of stepping stone jobs, which is what it is right now.

Yes, Texas recruited Willie Warren. They never had him in for an official. Things went a little sideways when he came in for an unofficial at the Ohio State football game in Austin. Not too badly, but badly enough that Texas fell behind on the recruitment.

Capel hired an assistant off of the Arkansas staff after Stan Heath was fired who had done a good job recruiting Warren for the Razorbacks. When he did that, Warren was as good as signed. I'd watch what happens with Taliofore (that's not his name, but I'm getting as close as I can off the top of my head) if Capel does indeed leave, and who OU would bring in instead.

Warren would have to want out of his LOI, OU would have to want to grant it, which is entirely up to them, and then Warren would actually have to want to come to Texas.

Those are a lot of ifs, and the biggest one --- Capel choosing to leave the job at OU --- hasn't even happened yet.

Just out of curiosity...IF Capel bolts Norman, is there a favorite out there to follow him to okie?

By the way, there is a precedent for Texas to wind up with a player that committed first to blow-u. He's on this year's team.

I know Self's got a good situation up in Lawrence, and I know he's an okie lite grad, but if KU self-destructs before the final four, like they usually do, and if the criticism picks up, would Self consider blow-u? It's an interesting thought...

Seems like Castiglione went thru several on his list before he got to Capel. But that might have just been OKC sportstalk (if you wanna call it that) radio which I heard when I happened to be in the area during that time period.

If Capel leaves OU for South Carolina, I'm going to be confused. South Carolina is not a step up from Oklahoma. SC is, at best, a middle of the pack SEC program. Capel has recruited two McD's AA in two years. I don't think, at this point, that Griffin is going to leave. He can build something in Norman. Even if doesn't plan on sticking around and is treating OU like a stepping stone job, he can do better than SC if he stays and succeeds in the next two years.

I do think that Griffin will leave, but i don't think Capel will leave. I've seen Griffin at anywhere from 7 to 18 on mock drafts...

keep in mind for Griffin the factor of playing with his big brother another year. i think he stays, esp with the injury concerns too.

Well, whatever actually happens, I'm hoping Capel stays.

However, I do feel like he's going to take the South Carolina job for a variety of reasons. We'll see what happens.

I don't think there's any way Capel leaves for SC unless they pony up 2M or something crazy like that.
I don't think he'll be at OU long but, I thought Sampson would leave sooner than he did as well.
OU hasn't had many coaches the past 30 years. 3, counting Capel (well, 28 years) so OU really hasn't been a stepping stone job.
Caple will leave someday but not for a SC job. OU will be good next year w/ the league being down somewhat & OU is going to be pretty loaded to make a B12 run & maybe go deep in the tourney if Warren pans out.
Need a guy to take over for Longar but if we find that guy then OU will be pretty salty.
Might get back a guy we sent to juco this year that is better than anyone we could land in recruiting so if he comes back (Clark) OU should have a good/great team.
Capel will land a bigger job than SC.
I'd put the % of him leaving this year at 5%.

I jut don't see Capel leaving either, unless there is something behind the scenes that none of us will ever see.

As much as ou sucks, SC isn't a step up.

Leaving OU for South Carolina is a lateral move at best. USC's facilities are awful and the program is in the bottom half of the SEC East, for crying out loud.

OU is a solid 2nd tier program without a lot of pressure to win and a history of paying well. Something tells me this is a ploy by Capel to get more money from OU.

That's ain a lateral move; it's a step down -- way down.

And OU is not a second tier program. They have some good history, regularly make the Tournament, and have a good recruiting base.

Would be surprised to see him leave but money talks.

SC is hell bent on hiring a black coach. Their admin has even said they are looking for a black coach first & foremost, for whatever reason. Must be the confederate flag flying outside their capital image that they're trying to ditch or something.
SC just doesn't have anything over OU in anyway basketball wise to make the move other than Capel wants to get back to that area.
The history between the 2 programs far outweights OU the past 25 year vs. anything SC has done.
OU has been a #1 seed in the tourney more times than any other seed in our history (believe it or not) & up until last year held the longest post season tourney record in D1 @ 25 straight years.
That's something when there's team like Duke, UNC, UCLA out there who haven't had the post season string that OU enjoyed up until that point.

The thing about college basketball as compared to football is in football, there are a lot more first tier jobs. They are maybe 15-20. In basketball, however, there are maybe 5-7. I think the only top tier job in the Big 12 may be Kansas. Texas might be borderline but then ask yourself would Barnes bolt Texas for North Carolina. If the answer is yes, then Texas is borderline.

By saying OU is a solid second tier job, that's not an insult. There's a huge swath of those schools. OU, however, has a history of paying well for a second tier job. I remember reading where Sampson was making something like $1.5 million per year when he left and actually took less money in his first year at Indiana. (He was scheduled to get hefty raises after that first year but we all know how that turned out.)

Anyway, Capel should stay at OU, take their money and low expectations, and wait until Duke opens up. Who knows when that will be but he'll win more and make more money at OU than he would at South Carolina.
