It wasnt an error because it didnt hit either outfielder's glove. You cannot (as much as you truly want to) give a mental and/or stupidity error in the outfield

I never did understand the rule that it has to touch a fielders glove to be considered an error. They would be closer to making the play if it hit their glove than if they totally whiffed on it.
