Did we lose two games because....

After listening to Rod Babers 12 minute rant on the pitiful scheme Manny Diaz had installed to stop the zone read last week a thought occurred to me.

What if Manny were not the DC from the start of the season. Is it possible we might have won those two seemingly winnable games that we lost after having a lead in both of them?

I still remember Manny saying " I will have guys dropping out of helicopters and jumping out of the ground from nowhere". This should have tipped our beloved head coach off that Manny was going to blitz blitz and blitz excessively, and that we would pay dearly which we did to the tune of over 700 yards+. I think we used to call it "mugging".

Watching that defensive insanity made me GO crazy

those two weeks. I still cannot believe college educated people could be so stubborn, and stupid and not make the simple corrections that our dearly beloved new DC Greg Robinson finally made.

It amazes me our 5.5 million dollar head coach could not figure
it out till now. He does not seem to have much football smarts for that kind of money. It would have been nice to potentially get to Dallas 5-0.

So there you have it, the endless blitzing and getting ripped for big yards is done for now. But the damage to the season is already done.

I think Manny was speaking about Harsin's offensive shifts and offensive motions when he said something about "guys dropping out of helicopters and jumping out of the ground".

That being said, the initial results of Greg Robinson's schemes seem to be positive at this point, but KSU's offense was not as good as Mississippi's. It will be telling to see how UT fares against OU, OSU, Baylor and Tech.

Diaz was talking about Harsin's offense and TEs dropping out of helicopters and coming out of holes in the ground.

Nice try though

On OB, when Mack was questioned about Diaz after the BYU debacle... he said something to the effect of - well, I gave him the benefit of the doubt about the recent past (about the D for 2011 & especially 2012) and he did not want to prematurely ruin Diaz' young coaching career.

Ketch commented and had a red flag as did I reading his post.

So my comment / question: Mack you had doubts about Diaz. After what you saw on the field over-and-over, you put YOUR coaching neck on the line for another coach by giving him the benefit of that doubt - didn't want to ruin his career - why?

My first thought was GD Mack - we hired you to coach / be CEO - put the interests of UT above everyting else, interest of the team and win football games. That trust did not include compromising your mission / your primary objective by cutting slack, give benefit of the doubt, being kind or not hurting coaches careers... as CEO you have to make tough decisions and sometimes be the bad guy to get the results you were hired to achieve.

Stat: I agree that BYU is a game that may well have been winnable with the defense that played against KSU. I wish UT had that one back to play again.

For those who have not seen this, here are video examples and explanations of the good defensive play in the KSU game from Barking Carnival.

Diaz had thru last season to perform. He failed. He should have been let go after the bowl.

I could still be wrong but I am very sure the helicopter comment was Mannys.

Agree with you WorsterMan, Stat , Old hippie and Dilo.

Even the inept Matt Millen wondered voraciously why we weren't stacking the box against BYU's zone read. instead, we kept playing a Nickel zone defense. At least with KSU, we dared them to pass the ball by putting 8 in the box.

Brown not seeing and taking charge to override Diaz makes me wonder if Mack even paid attention to the defense.

Thanks for the link Taps.

Now that that straightened out we can concentrate on BEATING THE HELLL OUTTTA OKLAHOMA!

I'll take a Carl Reese "mugging" defense over a Manny Diaz "wtf" defense any day of the week. Carl might have gotten beat up against the spread, but there was no way we'd get gashed for 550 on the ground.

It's obvious that this base nickel D that we've been touting is a vain attempt to hide our deficiencies, but it just creates more weaknesses, especially against the run and when there's man coverage. Manny didn't coach up the LBs to do anything useful, hence the need to drop one of them from the lineup every play.

I think Diaz was like "well hell, if I have to call the plays plus be responsible for the LBs, I'll just drop one and let Akina take up the slack."

See, you put the smiley face, but the results show exactly that. Akina isn't an idiot, but Manny's schemes have made his players (especially safeties and a constantly-out-of-position-Diggs) look like fools.
